“Wildwood” director Travis Knight calls AI an “amazing piece of technology” but says, “I’m not embracing it at all.”
“I see technology as a tool, and we use technology at Laika. A pencil is technology, a paintbrush is technology, a 3D printer is technology. Technology is useful when you put it in the hands of people, when you put it in the hands of artists who can amplify their voice."
“Technology is not useful when it takes the place of the artist, and that’s the concern with generative AI,” he continued. “It’s an amazing piece of technology, but the concern is that when it supplants the artist, then we have an issue because the computer cannot speak about humanity at all. It doesn’t know what it feels like.”

being a screenwriter is so bizarre, like someone is paying me to hallucinate horrific scenarios and write them down in a way that is pleasing and engaging with the hope that someone with a camera will capture that madness in your mind. Fascinating, when you think about it.

It's Silent Movie Day! Did you know not all silent films were black and white? Color processes like Kinemacolor were shown as early as 1909, and film was tinted and colored by hand even earlier. Here are some examples of early silent films in color from the Library's National Screening Room!

Get off social media, write your script, send it to some people, live your life. Let the Internet inspire you, come for some research, but don't forget why you are here as a writer. To write. To create stories. There's only so much advice and information you can take in.

"I wrote 11 scripts before I sold my first script."
Michael Arndt on what it takes to be a successful writer:
"I'm gonna be a writer, I'll probably write a screenplay a year, and I'm probably gonna live for fifty more years. So I'm probably gonna write 50 screenplays."
"If I'm lucky, five of them will get made into movies. And if I'm lucky, one of them will be a good movie."
"My number one thing is you gotta be humble."
"Kurosawa gets up to receive his honorary Oscar. He's in his eighties, and he stands up and he goes, I don't feel like I deserve this yet because I'm only beginning to understand movies now.
And I'm like, if Kurosawa can be that humble about movies and storytelling, like, we should all be humble."

Today feels like a good day to remind people in the film industry to not surround yourself with negativity. This career is already hard enough. I am very aware you can't "out-manifest" a bad situation BUT I also know misery loves company and misery gets clicks.
I was just at a film festival with thousands of film lovers and filmmakers. It was magnetic. I talked to some many writers, producers, directors, and actors who are MAKING SHIT HAPPEN. You can choose to doom scroll or listen to "what happens when the industry dies" podcasts, or you can surround yourself with people who are kicking the door down.
Choose what you consume wisely because it will be what you become.

Write movies because you love it, because that is the life of being a writer, and the way in which your career will unfold is out of your control. So enjoy the dang thing. Don't be so hard on yourself. Don't blame yourself for things you tried your best on. Keep living. Write on.
