If you monitor a storm east of 106°W, you have a better view with the GOES-16 satellite, and if you monitor a storm west of 106°W, you have a better view with the GOES-18 satellite.
I really hate the @CIRA_CSU slider sometimes. Yesterday the images disappeared at around 04:00 UTC and today they were already gone by 01:30 UTC. So I lost a lot of images I wanted to save. Is there anyone I can contact to still get them? I am both annoyed and desperate now.

This storm is extremely impressive. It is extremely difficult for a tropical cyclone with a core of this size with a 30-40 nm eye to produce winds up to 175 mph let alone 185 mph. And it reaching a pressure below 900 mb is even harder to do. And it has had 180+ for 18 hours...

This is what a textbook successful eyewall replacement cycle looks like. It can be the beginning of the end for most storms, but for #Champi, it went nearly perfect and it has now become a 155kt/899mb buzzsaw. Immense energy required to produce this, with seamless execution.

#Champi back to Category 5 after EWRC completion. CDO is thinner than expected, maybe due to quick SEF formation which can be common on storms who previously peaked at or below 900mbar. 140-145kt current. ACE production in overdrive, likely to be 50 total out of this storm.

Spotted on satellite: an otter eddy right off Bodega Bay!
While it sounds like a fluffy "sharknado", an otter eddy is actually a type of mesolow (small low pressure center)! Offshore winds interact with complex coastal terrain to create this cyclonic coastal eddy.

Strongest TC of 2026 possible. Edging out Sinlaku (160/165kt) and Polo (155/160kt) is possible next week. System heading west-northwest coming from the Mariana Islands in October? This is a setup that is CAPABLE of producing the max potential TC intensity in the world.
