Open letter calls on Scottish Government to justify its long-standing political and policy support for open-net salmon farming. Concerns about salmon farming are widespread. It’s high time the Scottish Government paid attention ✊

Concluding today's session, @fincarson asked @MairiGougeon👇
Do you believe sufficient progress has been made since the 2018 report, which concluded that standards of regulation of the salmon farming sector in Scotland were ‘not acceptable’?

SIFT was delighted to meet this year's Ocean Defenders as they joined us at the Our Seas #CoastalTestimonies launch in Glasgow last night! Read more and find out where you can join in at @ourseas_scot 🐟🐟🐟🐬🐬
Treated to dolphin craft from Mickey and Alex, and fact finding from David Nairn on porpoises in The Clyde, the ODs had a fintastic time while learning about our coastline.

Currently, there are almost no restrictions on where or how many wrasse can be trapped. There are also weak limits on when wrasse can be trapped: they can even be caught during their breeding season – because that is when lice are at their worst in the salmon farms 🐟

ICYMI @scotgov is bringing in Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM) for scallop dredge and large pelagic fishing vessels.🚢
We urge @scotparl to endorse REM and call for its expansion across fleets to help monitor fishing activities and promote sustainable fisheries.
Legislation to make Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM) mandatory on scallop dredge and large pelagic vessels in Scottish waters has been laid in Parliament today.

Salmon farms capture thousands of lumpsuckers and wrasse from the wild to use as 'cleaner fish' before killing and disposing of them. These fish are a vital part of coastal ecology, yet are treated as a disposable commodity by salmon farms. #Offthetable

This year, the Scottish salmon farming industry reported a record mortality rate for August more than double that of some previous years. There is no place for this damaging industry in our waters.

Yet again @scotgov shelf marine protection. #MPA management is delayed and Priority Marine Feature protection and an inshore cap consultation are absent in @HumzaYousaf 's first programme of Government. Remind your MSPs of their commitments 👉 bit.ly/inshorecapscot

🪸 The Scottish Govt promised Marine Protected Areas would get real protection & management by March 2024. But now they've abandoned that promise & our marine environment is paying the price.
Tell your MSPs to stop delaying & act now to protect our seas: bit.ly/inshorecapscot

Our seas need space for protection, conservation & industry. And this can all work together. By prioritising low-impact fishing - through designation of specific low-impact areas - coastal communities will be supported & both environment & economy will benefit.
