New research from @UHN’s @PMunkCardiacCtr shows that the protein ERG helps protect blood vessels from changes that drive atherosclerosis—the buildup of plaque in the arteries. Findings could point to future therapeutic strategies to protect arteries.

A new study in @NatureComms, led by @UHN collaborators including Drs. @kat_howe and Jason Fish investigate the role of the ETS transcription factor ERG, a key regulator of #endothelial identity, in atheroprogression. 🧫 go.nature.com/4pzZB7Z
They identify ERG as an enforcer of endothelial function that restricts 🚫 endothelial‑to‑mesenchymal transition to limit atherosclerosis.

The aorta doesn't get enough respect. Even though it's uncommon, in someone who presents with chest pain, especially severe, we were trained to rule out aortic dissection before anything else.
Most likely Senator Graham had a Type A dissection and longstanding hypertension. If obtained previously, an echocardiogram or other image may have revealed a widening or aneurysm of the thoracic aorta.
