I also just recently finished "Children of Time" by adrian tchaikovski. It was recommended by @StrateSQL. Can get a little confusing with time jumps but pretty interesting Sci fi novel.

That's the implied expectation but at the end of the day the contract is binding and that's what matters. If the contract terms explicitly state contractor doesn't have to do X, and they signed it, then contractor is in the right.
