During the Great Depression of the 2020s, shitcoining became an unexpected and intriguing phenomenon. These endurance contests were not just about hodling; they were a desperate attempt to secure lambos and mansions during a time of widespread economic hardship.
Degening, also known as "flipping shitcoins" or "investing," was a unique blend of entertainment and survival. It typically took place in large telegram groups or social media, where degenerates traded continuously for hours, days, or even weeks on end. The first one to sell the top would win a cash prize, which often included nfts and other necessities.
Participants came from all walks of life, drawn by the promise of memes, a place to hang out, and a chance to escape the destitution of the era. Many were unemployed and homeless, and the marathon offered a fleeting respite from their harsh realities.
The rules were strict. People had to maintain a continuous uptrend with only short breaks for cooldown and dips. The trading itself was grueling, with terribly retarded memes and annoying personas called "influencers."
Participants faced exhaustion, bankruptcy, and sometimes even rug pulls. Some degens paid an admission fee to get the alpha, turning it into a form of insider trading.
The longer the shitcoining went on, the more they paid in gas fees. This provided some income to miners, who, in turn, used a portion of it to provide basic necessities like cars and mansions to themselves.
Lambos became a critical motivator and a source of hope for the degens. Some protocols offered air drops where degens could get lucky and redeem their portfolio. The prospect of a lambo at the end of a long trading session provided the endurance needed to keep going.
However, shitcoins weren't without controversy. Critics argued that they exploited vulnerable people during a time of desperation. The SEC sometimes shut down protocols due to concerns over investors' safety.
Despite these challenges, shitcoins persisted throughout the Great Depression, offering a glimmer of hope and sustenance to those in need.
