There's no point in environmental regulation that doesn't have sufficient grounds to actually start tests.
Glad to get committee's support for CEC to follow this up with ScotGov after resident & x-party concerns were raised. The fight for a cleaner Water of Leith continues... 🌊

ALT Addendum by the Liberal Democrat Group Regulatory Committee 30th September 2024 Item 7.3 - Water of Leith Water Quality-Response to adjusted Motion raised by Cllr Nols-McVey to City of Edinburgh Council on 8 February 2024. Adds .1.3 Regrets that the Water of Leith Basin and the River Almond do not receive bacterial testing and notes that Regulatory schemes can be, and have been introduced in other areas of regulation, to protect both nearby residents and nature. 1.1.4 Requests that the Regulatory Convenor write to the relevant Environment minister and Environmental Standards Scotland... Sewage dumped in Scottish rivers 68 times a day – worst areas revealed. The number of spills into rivers, lochs, and beaches, including our Water of Leith, is even higher than previously thought.

The right to protest is a critical element of any democracy. While we do not condone any action that breaks the law, we are shocked by the harsh sentences passed down to @JustStop_Oil activists, while those polluting our planet continue to go unsanctioned.

We're delighted with @forthports' recent revival and restoration of the Victoria Swing Bridge and surrounds.
So we were disheartened to see this graffiti appear overnight along the gorgeous blue wrought iron trusses.
Anyone know anything?

🚨Avoid the water in Portobello tomorrow🚨
I’m extremely concerned at the alert re the water in Portobello. This is a threat to human health.
Scottish Water is publicly owned. The Scottish Government should be stepping up, but they are missing in action (1/2)

@ScottishEPA is temporarily advising against bathing and paddling,at Portobello Beach from Pipe Lane to Joppa Rocks, due to the potential risk to human health. Signage has been posted at the area, and further details are available on our website, and SEPA: edinburgh.gov.uk/news/articl…

It's so sad that the council wants to monitor why we can't swim or paddle in Porty instead of dealing with it.
"The matter is currently under investigation, and we’ll continue to liaise with SEPA and our partners to monitor the situation" @ERCScot

Worth the wait! After a long restoration, the Victoria Swing Bridge officially reopened this morning with a new #community flag depicting ‘#Leith #Future’ + a piped procession led by #Scotland’s National Piper.

Hi, @edinhelp - we got a message from the council that our request to clear the overflowing bins from Dock Place had been completed. The picture taken a few minutes ago shows an even worse situation. Can you help? @KatrinaFaccenda @adamnolsmcvey @Edinburgh_CC

@edinhelp - this is becoming almost a weekly, dismal event. Why is this happening? @KatrinaFaccenda and @adamnolsmcvey, thanks for the help before and we are seeking your assistance again

Time for a chat about landuse planning in the Pentlands ?
Or shall we just share some more photos of the Water of Leith ?
Final update: The bags have been removed. Thanks to Councillors @KatrinaFaccenda and @adamnolsmcvey for their rapid assistance!
Unbelievable... the council will take up to ten working days to clear this up @adamnolsmcvey @KatrinaFaccenda @CllrChasBooth

Chris Whitty has called reducing sewage in rivers and seas a public health priority. This was in support of a report by the Royal Academy of Engineering, available here: nepc.raeng.org.uk/testing-th….
🧵...
Would you join us in asking the @Edinburgh_CC, primarily via councillors @adamnolsmcvey and @JackRMCaldwell, where we are in understanding any potential health risk from sewage discharges into the silt, particularly from the eight sewage outlets discharging into the basins?
