I In 1931, a 26-year-old Calcutta radio man was told he could not recite the Chandi Path on air because he was not a priest. He recited it anyway, and 95 years later, Bengal still wakes at 4 a.m. on Mahalaya to hear Birendra Krishna Bhadra. The programme was Mahishasuramardini, first broadcast live at dawn from Akashvani, Calcutta, in 1931. Script by Bani Kumar, music by Pankaj Kumar Mullick, and one voice that would come to define the start of Durga Puja. When orthodox critics objected to a Kayastha chanting the Chandi, Bani Kumar refused to drop him. The orchestra itself included Muslim musicians. It was Bengal’s syncretic genius, broadcast before sunrise. For 35 years it went out live. From 1966, Akashvani has played a recording, the same one millions still switch on today. In 1976, AIR replaced it with “Durga Durgatiharini”, narrated by Uttam Kumar, the biggest star in Bengal. Listeners revolted. The next year, Bhadra was back. Nobody has tried since. Bhadra died in 1991. The voice did not. A short animated film on the man and the broadcast that became a ritual 👇শুভ মহালয়াI In 1.18 minutes.

This is an excellent qn. Vibhishan is NOT called ghar ka bhedi in Ramayan. The boon he asked from Brahma ji was 'In all situations, however bad, let my buddhi always be established in Dharma'. And he lives tht. That we have made Karna hero and Vibhishan villian is our failing.

In the Yogavāsiṣṭha 2.7.29 is an evocative analogy of a lake and a lotus serving as a mutual basis for each other's beauty, for how the fulfilment of mati/understanding and śāstra is also reciprocal.🪷 wisdomlib.org/hinduism/book/… (Eng. trans.) archive.org/details/ag-1_202… (Hindi trans.)

This has to be one of the profoundest verses in world literature.

One of the heart-wrenching devotional cry of Utapladeva, from Śivastotravalī: "प्रसीद भगवन् येन त्वत्पदे पतितं सदा । "O Lord, be pleased! so that I always remain fallen at Your feet, and my mind melts away by the taste (of various mystical states). Whether in great joy or sorrow, whether in a wall or in a pot, whether outside or inside, O Lord, reveal Yourself." Notice what he does not ask for. He does not ask Śiva to remove his suffering. He does not ask for mystical powers. He does not even ask for liberation. He asks only one thing: "Reveal Yourself." In joy—reveal Yourself. In sorrow—reveal Yourself. In the sacred—reveal Yourself. In the ordinary wall and the ordinary pot—reveal Yourself. Within me—reveal Yourself. Outside me—reveal Yourself. This is the essence of Tantra, not escaping the world, but recognising Śiva in everything. Utpaladeva, as a great philosopher, argues with extraordinary precision, but as a devotee, he weeps like us for the Lord Śiva: प्रकटीभव मे प्रभो — "Manifest Yourself to me, O Lord." Jai Ma Ram!

In the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata, Bhishma explains the mechanics of governance to Yudhishthira: "Is it the time that makes the king/the king that makes the time? Have no doubt: the king is the cause of the times." The leader's choices shape the era, but the state of the society dictates the limits of execution. Ancient Indian wisdom dictates that governance is a symbiotic wheel. We cannot eliminate systemic social evils like food adulteration/exam cheating/cleanliness through top-down policing alone if parts of the civic fabric itself are willing to engage in them. True development requires the simultaneous evolution of Dharma (civic duty) within the populace & Danda (state enforcement) from above.
