156 games later, and our field still looks THAT good. 🤌
A huge congratulations to Chris Shastid, your 2026 PCL Groundskeeper of the Year, and to the entire Field Operations crew behind one of the busiest fields in baseball.

Look at the past 24 hours of timelapse from the University of Utah Meteorology cameras. You can see all of the monsoon showers and thunderstorms. The camera looking west actually catches a lightning strike. More of this severe weather is coming today and tonight.
Heat tolerance of 365ss is impressive. Doing a variety of things to help it, but watering every 4 days in this heat in addition to those low temps is impressive. Any product that tricks people into thinking I know what I’m doing is a winner for me
The Heat Returns With a Vengeance! Temperatures will top 100 for five days, reaching 104 on Sunday. Monsoon moisture will trickle into the Wasatch Front early next week, but no major storms are anticipated until the middle of the first week of August. @DanPopeWeather #utwx

Monsoon is Finicky, but Tries to Make A Showing Midweek There will be a very slight chance for evening thunderstorms tonight & the next couple of days (and hot). A higher chance for monsoon moisture & more widespread thunderstorms comes on Tuesday & Wednesday, then cooler. #utwx

As turfgrass managers, golf and sports alike, in the middle of a challenging growing season thus far, it's important to remember the wise words of one of the greatest turfgrass scientists in history, Dr. James B. Beard.
Give yourself some grace, remember why you're here, and enjoy the view from the best office in the world.

The three dogs have become unofficial members of the @SaltLakeBees grounds crew, spending their days at the ballpark and bringing smiles to players and staff.

For a groundskeeper, baseball season is repeatedly saying “Once we get through this stretch things will slow down” from February till Christmas.

Auditions are OPEN for our May 21 Talent Show night
Back in my day, AAA opening day was a week later and the season ended on Labor Day. Also, no one had invented the tamp. We just used our fists and were men about it

NOAA is about to roll out the new GFS/GEFS AI weather models on December 17th ⬇️
- AIGFS is an AI version of the GFS model. Its built on Google DeepMind's GraphCast and was trained on a mix of NOAA's GFS data plus ERA5 and HRES data from the European center. It runs four times a day and puts out 6 hourly forecasts going out 16 days.
- AIGEFS is the ensemble version of that. It runs 31 different members with the same 16 day range.
- HGEFS takes those 31 AI members from AIGEFS and combines them with the 31 members from the traditional physics based GEFS. So you get a 62 member grand ensemble that blends AI and conventional modeling together. This one goes out 10 days.
Available parameters include temperature, u and v wind components, geopotential height, specific humidity, vertical velocity, mean sea level pressure, and total precipitation. Data is output on a 0.25 degree lat lon grid at the surface and on pressure levels at 1000, 925, 850, 700, 600, 500, 400, 300, 250, 200, 150, 100, and 50mb.
The evaluation period actually started on December 9th so the data is already available on NOMADS if you want to check it out before they go fully operational next week (nomads.ncep.noaa.gov/). This is the first time NOAA is making AI models fully operational. Should be interesting to see how they perform against the traditional physics based models.

If a foreign adversary snuck into our Federal budget and cut Education and Science Research the way we’re cutting it ourselves — strategically undermining America’s long-term health, wealth, and security — we would likely consider it an act of war.
