The first day of SICSS-Penn 2026 just recently concluded! We were honored to have @dhopkins1776 deliver the opening remarks, and Dolores Albarracín (of @socialactionlab) give the first lecture on AI and the psychology of persuasion.

Over the last two weeks, SICSS-Penn brought together graduate students, postdocs and faculty to explore computational social science through lectures, tutorials and collaborative research.
Hosted by @csspen, a collaboration between Penn Engineering, @Wharton and @AnnenbergPenn, the program continues to foster interdisciplinary research.
Thank you to everyone who made this year's SICSS-Penn a success.
Why don't reported treatment effects generalize? On Thursday, @YingJin531 explained that it is not only because of covariate shift (the "usual suspect") — but also because of conditional shift. Quantifying their relative contributions is important in all experimental research.
On Wednesday, SICSS participants learned how to conduct survey experiments and text analysis in climate politics research from @sabrinabarias of @LehighU.
As LLMs become increasingly pervasive in social science research, questions about replication, reproducibility, ground truth and wisdom of the crowd are more important than ever. Thank you to @arthur_spirling and @AdamBouyamourn for sharing your latest research at SICSS-Penn!
We are pleased to extend our congratulations to 40 scholars who have been accepted to SICSS-Penn in 2026! Please check your email if you submitted an application. We look forward to welcoming you to Philadelphia this summer.
Two more days to apply for the Summer Institute in Computational Social Science at Penn! We look forward to welcoming you to Philadelphia.

The Summer Institute in Computational Social Science (SICSS) at @CSSPenn recently concluded. Bringing together social and data scientists for an intensive program focused on interdisciplinary research and collaboration, SICSS invited doctoral candidates, faculty and industry experts to spark new discussions and consider different perspectives.
Language technologies like LLMs encode an enormous amount of cultural knowledge. Today, we learn from @LyleUngar of @PennEngineers about how to use them to study social norms around the world.
Welcome to the eighth day of SICSS-Penn 2025! We are honored to have @JaneEsberg of @Penn's Political Science Department, who talked about her work on using text analysis to understand political censorship.
Facilitating cross-partisan conversations is a potential intervention to address affective polarization — but the topic of discussion matters! Today, we welcome James Houghton of @CSSPenn to talk about his "deliberation lab" in this direction.
How do different people — and AI models — perceive hate speech? What are the implications of this heterogeneity in content moderation on social media? We're excited learn from @thomasrdavidson of @RutgersU at SICSS-Penn today!
On day 4, @DaniSBassett from @PennEngineers used network science to investigate the different "styles" of human curiosity — Are we more like "busybodies," "hunters," or "dancers"? — and how they might help us build better, more human-like artificial intelligence.
What is the value of a career? What are the effects of automation on the labor market? We are excited to have @Prof_Yildirim at @Wharton who is talking about "Automation, Career Values, and Political Preferences."
What can we do to address the replication crisis, the file drawer problem, and incommensurable experiments? We are honored to welcome Sean Ellis this morning to talk about the amazing "megastudies" conducted at @BehaviorChange.
The first day of SICSS-Penn 2025 just concluded with @manoelribeiro's talk "Content Curation in Online Platforms."
