A very detailed study on #MECFS from the NIH group. My take-home points after a quick read: 🧠 MECFS is a brain disorder in keeping with my assertion that #POTS is a CNS disorder. link.springer.com/article/10… 🧠 Transcranial dopplers in the supine and standing position were not done - a missed opportunity to detect cerebral hypoperfusion in pts. vs controls. 🧠 2-Day CPET was not done - a missed opportunity to detect post-exertional malaise in pts vs. controls 🧠 Autonomic dysfunction in the form of sympathetic overactivity, unrelated to anxiety or depression, is a major underlying mechanism of fatigue in MECFS. 🧠 Immunologic and mitochondrial dysfunctions are among the mechanisms of MECFS. 🧠 Biological sex differences in MECFS exist via distinct metabolic, immunologic and genetic pathways. #MedTwitter #NeuroTwitter #Dysautonomia #LongCovid
The long-awaited NIH Intramural Study of ME/CFS, led by Avindra Nath, has finally been published in full. 🧵 "Considering all the data together, Post-infectious ME/CFS (PI-ME/CFS) appears to be a centrally mediated disorder." 1/ nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

Nose breathing for heart health. 🫀 There are claims that nasal-only breathing is superior to mouth breathing. How does their physiology differ? And does nose breathing really produce beneficial effects on the body? Thread. 🧵

Our noses are amazing organs that have over 30 different functions. The nose regulates our whole breathing system. It is a filter, an air-conditioner, it helps immune defence against bacteria and viruses, get more oxygen because of NO, and can help to calm the nervous system.

Sometimes the natural rhythm of our breathing can become disrupted, which is known as a breathing pattern disorder (#bpd). What does this actually look like? How can it be treated? Our case study shows how the process works and the difference it can make bit.ly/3r6ncD6

Never heard of this before. I wonder what else we're using or consuming that has a negative impact on our health.
I don't use mouthwash for a number of health reasons. One effect is on nitric oxide production which regulates blood vessels. Mouthwash users had 85% higher risk of physician-diagnosed hypertension compared to less frequent users. doi.org/10.1080/08037051.201…

Managing #Dysautonomia can be challenging, but the most important aspects are: ✅ It's not psychological, it's physiological ✅ Don't refer to psychologists or CBT as a knee-jerk reaction ✅ Recommend ⬆️ fluids/salt intake ✅ Recommend compression garments ✅ Recommend supine/sitting exercise ✅ Recommend meds #MedEd #MedTwitter #NeuroTwitter onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
Replying to @dysclinic
Thanks for the clarification. I’m still learning how to manage this disease so I appreciate that.
