Cars are a luxury good. They are INCREDIBLY expensive to buy, maintain and repair. They are a financial trap for low income people. Centering our civilization on them dilutes the tax base, destroys and degrades human settlements and immiserates, sickens and kills so many people.
I want to know what non-car people think of this.
A woman has two cars. A Toyota Camry and a Porsche 911 GT3 (very nice track car.)
Her boyfriend drives the GT3 without her permission, taking it racing through a field. She drives it, feels the suspension is screwed up, takes it to a shop and gets a $2000 bill.
The boyfriend thinks all this is exaggerated and doesnβt want to pay. Who is right?

Yes, and this kind of thinking leads to traffic. If you want to avoid traffic, you have to build a transportation SYSTEM with multiple, viable ways to get from point A to B. You also need planning models that enable walking and cycling.

According to the CSO, only 2,4% of children in Ireland cycle to school. 24% walk, but the majority (55%) get to school by car.
This is a shocking statistic. Our car-centric transport system has taken the freedom away from our children. We are enabling inactivity, not activity.
βCurrently about 2/3rds of all Dutch children walk or bike to school, with 75% of secondary school kids cycling to school. By enabling safe and active travel, #Dutch cities prevent an estimated one million car journeys to school each morning.β β @modacitylife in #CurbingTraffic

Almost half of all car journeys in Ireland are < 6 km - a perfectly cyclable distance, especially with an e-bike.
We need a paradigm shift. We need to enable people to cycle. The health benefits both to our own health and the planet's health would be enormous!

The true danger of polarised 'debate' on cycling infrastructure is that an individual can be led to remove bollards that were put in to make a junction safer, probably because they felt inconvenienced that they've had to slow down or be more cautious. The result, a loss of life.

The other Councillors, some of whom are there for decades, are just diverting the public's attention away from their abject failure to deliver sustainable transport solutions. They promote a Carbon Budget busting Ring Road but offer no alternative sustainable solution.

Then the bus proceeds to the next stop, and the lane looks empty again (except for the occasional taxi, with or without passengers).
And there's that line of mostly single-occupant cars again, carrying busy important people with better things to be doing than sitting in traffic.
