Walt Cunningham became a great family friend since a fundraising dinner for Be An Angel 30 years ago. My 40th Anniversary Apollo 7 coin is in my collection.
This week in 1968, the Apollo 7 crew was thoroughly testing the redesigned Apollo Command and Service Module, including the critical Service Propulsion System engine. The mission's success proved the spacecraft was ready for the next giant leap, clearing the way for Apollo 8 to become the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon.

Billboard lawyers are spending more than ever to get accident victims in the door. But winning clients isn’t the same as protecting them. Here’s where the money went—and what consumers need to know. 🧵

Whether it’s a criminal ring or an individual looking to scam someone, staged accidents are real and a growing problem across the US. Staged accidents target individuals or commercial vehicles to force a lawsuit. The problem has existed since the 1990s, and Texas has convicted several fraudsters in the past three decades. Congressional lawmakers filed federal legislation to address the problem. Texas lawmakers should create a state penalty to make sure these schemes never work again on Texas roads or in Texas courts. Tell lawmakers it’s time to stop lawsuit abuse in Texas.

Bill Avera of the Texas School District Police Chiefs Association just testified in front of the Texas Senate Committee on Education on the implementation of SB 571 and he advocated for once again allowing ISD police departments to investigate educator misconduct—even while acknowledging that, in the past, some school districts and ISD police departments failed to properly investigate these cases and instead swept them under the rug. Avera argued that requiring outside law enforcement to investigate educator misconduct is becoming a burden on local law enforcement agencies and is taking officers away from violent-crime investigations. But SB 571’s requirement that allegations of educator misconduct be reported to outside law enforcement was an important step toward addressing the inherent conflicts of interest that can arise when school districts investigate their own employees. Those conflicts contributed to situations in which misconduct was overlooked or inadequately addressed, allowing abuse to continue and leaving countless Texas schoolchildren vulnerable. We should not go backward. School district police should not be responsible for investigating allegations of misconduct involving the very employees and institutions they serve. The answer to the burden on outside law enforcement should be to provide those agencies with the resources necessary to conduct these investigations—not to return investigative authority to the school districts. Ultimately, we should be asking a broader question: Why do school districts need their own police departments at all? #ProtectTexasKids #txlege @TrueTexasTea @TexasEd911 @DonnaCampbellTX @TeamBettencourt @TexasGOP @drbone4tx

You will never receive a bill marked “lawsuit tax.” You pay it anyway. Excessive litigation costs the average Texas household an estimated $4,594 a year through higher prices, reduced earnings, and lost economic activity. Texas lawmakers can lower it.

I don’t care what the subject is: consent decrees, of all the possible legal vehicles out there, should not bind any subsequent elected official. This is what legislating and the appellate process are for, not prefab sue and settle lawsuits.
A federal judge on Monday denied a request by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and four Harris County Criminal Court-at-Law judges to vacate a landmark settlement on misdemeanor bail reform in the county. The ruling preserves a consent decree that allows most people facing misdemeanor charges to be released from jail prior to trial without having to pay cash bail. texastribune.org/2026/10/05/…

An elected official gets to decide how to execute their official duties - handle their business in any prescribed manner. If they go out of bounds there are existing checks to that. But to enter into a consent decree that binds subsequent holders of the same office? No.

A billboard lawyer recruits a client, sends the client to a handpicked medical provider, and presents the bill in court. When unnecessary treatment and excessive charges inflate the lawsuit, Texans can pay through higher premiums. Stop the pipeline. Pass reform.

Thank you @GregAbbott_TX for proclaiming October 5-9 Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week in Texas. In his proclamation, the governor was clear: Our civil justice system plays a key role in our society to keep our communities safe, resolve disputes, and protect our right to justice. ... We must continue to work together to ensure the protection of the innocent and the integrity of our legal system. Thank you for proclaiming Lawsuit Abuse a problem worth highlighting statewide! Lawmakers should take this week to learn about the challenges and pathways to solutions to keep our civil courts fair and predictable.

I heard this morning and my heart sank. I've known Kristin for 20 years - my whole legal career - since working together at the DA's office. In 2011 we became better friends as we ran for felony court benches together. You become lifelong friends with the crew you first ran with.
The First Court of Appeals is very saddened to learn of Justice Kristin Guiney’s untimely passing. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her entire family. Here is the Court’s full statement: txcourts.gov/media/1463409/s…

She was also my neighbor, living around the corner, so I would see her at Kroger and at school events as her youngest and my oldest are about the same age.

John & I have not agreed on everything. But there is no daylight in our recognition that communists have been and remain the greatest threat to our nation's prosperity & our children's future. Vote @JohnMcQueeneyTX in TX HD-97.

I have spent my career on both sides of appellate decision-making—first preparing cases for courts and now deciding them. As an advocate, I learned how much depends on a court’s attention to the record, the governing text, and the reasoning that will become precedent.
