Without question, there is an affordability crisis and it is those struggling the most to make ends meet who are hit hardest. But I would strongly caution Americans to not be too quick to make the same mistake as Canada by putting the architects of the crisis back in charge.
I’m not gonna lie. I’ve done well in life. But every day, I do basic things like shopping, traveling, and eating out. For a while now, every time I pay, I’ve gone from being the guy who never pays attention to stopping for a moment, looking at the receipt, looking at the cashier, and saying, “Holy shit, what did I get?” Or, “What the fuck? This isn’t worth it.” If I’m feeling like that, I have no idea what the fuck is going on in America. People must be suffering and that breaks my heart, cause it’s not what we voted for. Every day I see people telling me they’re sick and tired of Trump and his administration. I don’t give a shit what many of you bullshit artists, you fake-ass political influencers, are preaching on this fucking app. You’re liars, fucking retarded and pathetic. Americans are suffering. Most people I know, if not all of them, who voted for Trump regret it. So fuck off with your bullshit. Hell is coming. Everybody needs to buckle up. Treasuries are exploding. Diesel is unheard of. This is a fucking nightmare scenario.

The "restoration of democracy" in Hungary includes purging the sitting president, banning opposition MPs from re-election, and prohibiting the former PM from ever holding office again. When the libs say "our democracy," they mean it—you're not allowed to participate.
A dark day for Hungary. Today, Parliament is adopting constitutional amendments that unlawfully remove the sitting President of the Republic and ban sitting opposition MPs from running for re-election. The former Prime Minister had already been banned from running again. This marks the beginning of a constitutional crisis that could last for years. Ironically, it is being created by the party with the largest parliamentary majority in Hungary’s democratic history. Why? Because, like their liberal authoritarian allies in Brussels, they may have won the election, but they know they deceived their voters. And they fear that, in a free and fair democratic contest, they would be voted out. A government that fears the voters will always end up fearing democracy itself.

Marty Makary used to ambush a Virginia courthouse every other Friday. That was the day the local tax-exempt hospital reserved the docket to sue its poorest patients. Marty would show up at the door with a lawyer and intercept them on the way in. They were working-class people in job uniforms, embarrassed, grim-faced, expecting to lose. He reviewed the bills on the spot, for free, as a medical expert. Pointing out fraud, upcoding, inappropriate care, contradictions to the court. Then his counterpart, a young lawyer named Joey Kirchgessner, argued until the hospital cried uncle. They won A LOT. I drove down one Friday to watch. I was working in the Trump White House at the time. I was so proud of him I could barely stand it. That's the man the WSJ op-ed page wants you to believe is the problem. I wrote a book on the BP oil disaster, & there’s a critical parallel with ICE protests in Minnesota that almost everyone is missing. When the Deepwater Horizon explosion dominated Twitter for months, the narrative was simple: BP cut corners on safety. That story was comforting. It was also wrong. Dead wrong. The disaster wasn’t caused by too little safety. It was caused by safetyism. Before the explosion, HR and HSE departments overwhelmingly filled with women who never worked a dangerous job in their life became obsessed with eliminating all injuries offshore. Not major hazards. Not catastrophic risk. ALL injuries, even minor cuts & bruises. Tens of millions of dollars. Thousands of hours of paperwork. Endless training modules. Everyone, from dishwasher to captain, was empowered to shut down a drilling operation costing millions per day to prevent a sprained ankle. Meanwhile, people with deep technical expertise, guys who actually understood blowout risk, were sidelined or fired for saying the obvious: That HR induced exhaustion causes accidents. That drowning crews in paperwork makes them miss real danger. That spending money on back-injury training means less money preventing explosions. Like the protesters in Minnesota, HR and Safety became powerful, organized, coordinated via expensive software, mobile & completely detached from reality. One crewman reported a serious onboard fire that nearly killed someone. Nothing happened for weeks. When he kept pushing a manager told him to STFU. He called HR to report the “verbal abuse.” Within hours, an executive helicopter full of HR Quick Reaction Team launched from Houston. They didn’t investigate the fire. They investigated him, the guy who called HR. Their conclusion? The man reporting the fire was “repeatedly harassing the crew to report the fire.” He was fired. A company-wide HR memo publicly shamed him. All in the name of “safety.” Here’s the truth they refused to accept: offshore drilling is dangerous. You cannot extract tens of millions of barrels of oil without injuries & yes, sometimes death. Now apply that lesson to Minnesota. Law enforcement is dangerous. You cannot deport tens of millions of people without injuries & yes, sometimes death. Yes, Renee Good was shot. Yes, Alex Pretti was shot. Yes, ICE operations result in injuries. And yes more people will be hurt by ICE this year. But HR didn’t eliminate injuries offshore. They just reclassified them for statistics, exhausted the workforce, and made people afraid to report real problems setting the stage for a major explosion. That’s exactly what’s happening now. ICE agents are being forced to waste time protecting identities, managing feelings, navigating activist “volunteers” & hesitating rather than acting decisively when seconds matter. Every minute an agent loses sleep worrying about this is a minute less rested. Every hour spent on crowd-management training is an hour not spent on training to manage violent criminals. And worse.. I’m a ship captain. I was trained to make the hardest choice: to do the most good for the most people. I was taught that one day I might have to send a fire team into a space they won’t come back from to buy passengers ten more minutes to reach lifeboats. That’s the job. Numbers matter. Yes, Renee Good was shot. That’s tragic. But it pales next to the hundreds killed by violent illegal immigrants under Biden. It’s nothing compared to the thousands who died between the Darién Gap and Mexico. It’s microscopic compared to the 400,000 fentanyl deaths many in ICUs like the one Alex Pretti worked in. Yes, some children were separated from families. But FAR fewer than the number raped, killed, or abandoned between the Darien Gap & Mexico under Biden The hard truth is this: Safetyism caused the BP explosion. Safetyism has killed millions. Safetyism is killing this nation right now. ICE protestors aren’t saving lives, they are pushing the body count higher.

Craven until the end. When Biden’s wife died in a car accident, he dragged his grieving children to a press conference to display them to the media and garner sympathy for himself, all for political benefit. He used his drug addict son to launder money from corrupt regimes. He repeatedly lied about his other son’s cause of death. His 2020 campaign was launched under the banner of the Fine People Hoax. Now to distract from other problems, he pushes this latest news. No. I won’t do this. I won’t pretend he was honorable or that cancer washes away a lifetime of evil. I won’t stop talking shout the “winter of death” he promised those who didn’t take the Covid-19 vaccine. Or his many other crimes. His soul can of course be redeemed. May God have mercy on me, a sinner, and one who may be no better than Joe Biden. On this earthly realm, we are judged by the impact we have and the legacy we leave. A true telling of the Joe Biden story is that of an amoral man who would do anything for power and money. He is not a role model, he is not virtuous, he is not a public servant, he was self-serving, and in this fallen world, he won. He obtained wealth and power beyond the imagination of most humans. Whether that was worth the cost of his soul is an unresolved matter between him and God.

I feel for this small biz owner about whom he speaks. But I didn’t see any long diatribes like this over the last 5 years when small businesses were crushed left and right - from cost of goods increasing weekly on every single product, to labor costs skyrocketing, to excess regs coming down on every line item. Over the last 5 years our cost of goods in restaurants went up over 100% on some goods. Every single week we were faced with a decision to increase prices or eat the cost. Restauranteur’s lives are still ruined from the egregious shut downs during the pandemic - many left destitute. But fund managers are at risk of losing a few billion and suddenly we are in the worst financial crises in 100 years.

Our stock market is down. Bond yields are up and the dollar is declining. These are not the markers of successful policy. I am receiving an increasing number of emails and texts from small business people I do business with or have invested in, expressing fear that they will not be able to pass on their increased costs to their customers and will suffer severely negative consequences. For example, I am invested in a start up that makes cold brew coffee. Here is an excerpt of an email from the founder sent prior to China tariffs doubling: “Despite our efforts to mitigate risk, the new tariffs have immediate and significant negative implications for our cost structure, and have the potential to compress our gross margin by 60%+. Coffee and glass bottles are the largest % of COGs, and will be impacted by the following newly levied tariffs: •50% increase in cost of glass bottles (sourced from China) •26% increase in cost of chai (sourced from India) •10% increase in cost of coffee (sourced from Ethiopia, Peru, and Canada)   These new coffee and glass bottle tariffs alone will add an estimated $1.53 of COGS/unit for our 32oz, reducing our gross profit by nearly 60% to a ~12% gross margin (from 30%). We are currently priced at the top of the range for our set and do not believe we have the ability to increase price to offset this impact in the near-term.   What is particularly concerning is the sudden and sweeping inclusion of coffee and tea in U.S. tariffs, reversing a long-standing precedent dating back to the McKinley Tariff of 1890, which removed duties on these essential commodities. The decision to apply a universal 10% tariff on all imports -- including those that have historically been exempt -- marks a dramatic shift in trade policy and presents an existential threat to Explorer Cold Brew and other specialty beverage producers.

Unlike many industries, there is no 'reshoring' solution for coffee. The U.S. simply does not grow coffee at commercial scale, and domestic tea production is virtually nonexistent. There is no viable domestic alternative in the short or the long term.

We remain steadfast in our commitment to navigating these challenges. We are actively evaluating all options -- supplier negotiations, cost engineering, strategic reformulations -- but the impact of this policy is real, material, and immediate.

We will continue to keep you informed with full transparency as we assess and respond to these developments. Your support and partnership remain invaluable as we work to safeguard Explorer’s future and continue building a brand rooted in quality, transparency, and innovation.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or thoughts.” If you want to support Explorer Cold Brew, you can now find it at Whole Foods. A high quality cold brew available in varying degrees of caffeination for so long as it can survive. And this one from a company that designs and installs home audio and video solutions: “You wrote, “Almost no business can pass through an overnight massive increase in costs to their customers,” and I fear this could be devastating enough to put me out of business. Will my clients tolerate a near doubling of their contract costs overnight, or will they expect me to absorb the increases my vendors are already threatening? If clients resist price hikes and my employees demand higher wages to offset their rising cost of living, we end up in a lose-lose scenario—no spending and no jobs. While I understand you may not have time to respond, I hope that sharing the fears of a small business owner adds a tangible voice to the broader implications of your posts.” If the president doesn’t pause the effect of the tariffs soon, many small businesses will go bankrupt. Medium-sized businesses will be next. A 90-day pause will enable @realDonaldTrump to accomplish his objectives without destroying small businesses in the short term. May cooler heads prevail.
