What does it mean to deepen democracy? Over the past few years, My Vote Counts has worked in the shadow of genocide in Palestine and the spread of authoritarianism worldwide, a reminder that democracy is fragile and can be hollowed out even where its institutions remain standing. At home, thirty years of neoliberalism, austerity and elite pacts have left millions excluded and a crisis of demobilisation in place: unions co-opted, mass movements absorbed, and civil society professionalised into NGOs that too often speak in place of the people. The fragmentation of power after the 2024 elections offers a rare opening, but only if it becomes a lever for people's power rather than another elite reshuffling. "Democratic rights on paper mean little without organised, mobilised people able to defend them." That is the conviction behind everything we do, from our Constitutional Court victory against the influence of big money in politics, to convening the Civil Society Electoral Reform Panel, to building alongside movements rather than in place of them. Read Democracy in the Making to see how we are working to deepen democracy from below, and join us in making sure South Africa's democratic cracks become openings for people's power: myvotecounts.org.za/wp-conte…

The sooner #TB is found, the sooner people can start treatment and get the support they need. But early diagnosis depends on services that are accessible, information that people can understand and screening that reaches communities. Government must strengthen community-level #TB screening and testing and address barriers that prevent people from accessing diagnosis and treatment in time. #EndTB

The Healthy Living Alliance (HEALA) is calling on government to increase the Health Promotion Levy (HPL) on sugary drinks to 20%. The evidence is clear: sugary drinks are harmful; SA’s Health Promotion Levy is helpful. How many more lives must we lose?

Totalitarianism is when citizens are seen as enemies of the state. We’re seeing signs of exactly that, right here, in a country boasting the “best constitution in the world”!

Health is a fundamental human right, not a privilege reserved for a few. Yet many people living in rural communities continue to face major barriers to accessing quality healthcare, including long travel distances, understaffed facilities, limited medical resources, and inadequate infrastructure. We must continue to advocate for equitable healthcare access, stronger rural health systems, and meaningful investment in the healthcare workers who serve these communities every day. No matter where people live, they deserve dignified, accessible, and quality healthcare. No one should be left behind. #RuralHealth

They are attacking all immigrants. It is cheap political theatre going into an election when actual policy debate is too steep a climb. But to attack and harm those more vulnerable and disempowered, is the lowest form of politics.

On 1 October, we joined fellow grantees at the first @TrevorNoahFdn Khulani Nathi Innovation Fund (KNIF) Community of Practice Khulani Nathi means “we grow together” in isiXhosa, a fitting theme for a gathering focused on sharing ideas, exchanging experiences and building connections that strengthen our collective efforts to advance education justice. We valued the opportunity to learn from our partners’ approaches and strategies, reflect on our shared challenges and explore how we can translate new insights into meaningful change. By learning and working together, we can strengthen our impact and build a more just and equitable education system. What does this work look like in practice? For the EELC, it means investing in young people as leaders and changemakers in the fight for education justice. Through our Education Justice Ambassadors (EJA) Fellowship, a year-long youth pathways programme for young people from under-resourced schools across South Africa, we aim to equip the next generation of youth leaders to challenge education injustice and drive change. Through structured learning, practical experience and mentorship, the fellowship helps young people build the skills, knowledge and professional networks they need to enter the social justice sector and develop youth-led solutions to education injustice. With KNIF, we look forward to strengthening and expanding pathways for youth leadership and justice nationwide. Because young people should not simply be included in conversations about the future of education, they should have the tools, platforms and opportunities to shape it.

From Our Archives: When amaBhungane investigated how hundreds of millions of rand flowed out of Regiments Capital to mysterious “business development” companies, one question was hard to escape: how could Regiments’ own executive directors have been in the dark? In this interview from 2017, Niven Pillay tells Susan Comrie and Sam Sole that he only discovered that millions had flowed to obscure letterbox companies, Forsure and Fortime, after fellow director Eric Wood had left the company. He could not explain what services they provided. That was despite the scale of the payments. On one Transnet contract, Forsure and later Fortime were receiving 50% of Regiments’ fee, while another 5% went to a separate business development partner, Albatime. When pressed on how more than half the revenue from a contract could leave Regiments without its senior management or finance staff knowing, Pillay maintained that he discovered the payments only after the fact. Eight years later, the FSCA has debarred Pillay and Wood for 18 years after finding improper payment arrangements and unlawful revenue-sharing and procurement practices. Listen to Pillay explain what he knew ... and what he said he didn’t know. Read @SAJournalist's investigation: amabhungane.org/the-trojan-h…
