One of the great stories in our sport, as told by one of the great story tellers of our sport, Walt Murphy. This is Walt’s story of the great Bob Beamon!
This Day in Track & Field-Oct.18—The term “Beamonesque” entered the lexicon after Bob Beamon won the Long Jump at the 1968 Olympics with a stunning leap of 29-2 ½ (8.90), almost 2-feet farther than the previous World Record of 27-4 ¾ (8.35). tinyurl.com/5522ajmk 1 of 2

For Clayton Young, #theroadtoLA2028 has begun. His masterful run in Chicago Marathon , taking 7th in 2:05:23 continued his personal journey to his marathon dream.
Clayton experienced a 12 cm tear in a hamstring while finishing the Great North Run, just over a month ago.
His coach, Ed Eyestone, told me that Clayton’s training block was one of the more challenging that he has mentored.,
Ed Eyestone and Clayton Young made the final decision three days out, and you can listen, in this interview, that Clayton was well aware of the complexity of his situation in Chicago.
The overly enthusiastic vigor of Vinny Mauri over the first 30k set up a fine race for the American marathoners: Young and Charles Hicks followed,
Marathons are a crap shoot. Vinny Mauri experienced cramps and battled back, taking 10th in 2:06:46.
Clayton Young, a 2024 Olympian, displayed his experience, moving ahead of Mauri and pushing on to seventh in PB 2:05:33, with Charles Hicks in 8th, in 2:05:35 OB!
The interview shown was from Friday, October 9, in conjunction with British newspaper.
Note how Clayton Yoing gives the media his view of the complexity of his race situation, the challenges of an elite athlete coveting their own story in social media and the juggling of fulfilling the needs of sponsors.
Clayton Young did all of those things in his Bank of America Chicago marathon run on October 11, 2026!
If you would like to run the marathon in 2027, please go to Chicagomarathon.com/apply or go to the third link in our bio!
