Marriage rates in general have fallen to record lows.
Young people are marrying later than ever before. In 2023, the median age of newly married men and women exceeded 33.
Couples now tend to marry 10 years later in life than they did 50 years ago
Overall divorce figures remain lower than in the 1980s and 1990s.
Some 8.4 per 1,000 opposite-sex couples split in 2025, down from a peak of 14.2 in 1993
David Lister, a divorce lawyer with Vardags, said: “We’re not in a happy situation in this country at the moment.
“For many, the house is the principal asset. If you’re not sure you can sell that, you’re stuck there”
Some couples were thinking of affairs as a “starting point of a new and better relationship, rather than the end”, Karen Doherty, a relationship therapist, said.
Marriages usually begin to break down at least three to five years before a divorce, Ms Doherty said
Spouses who will eventually split manage an average of 13 years before they get divorced, ONS figures show.
It’s the longest couples have lasted before divorcing since records began in 1963. It is also up from a low of 8.9 years in 1985
Couples are staying together for record durations before divorce. But it’s not because relationships got better
Spouses turn to therapy and forgive infidelity, rather than press the “nuclear button” in a bleak financial landscape, experts have said
