UK water privatisation is staggering. Companies were effectively handed monopolies over an essential, inelastic good on two basic conditions - don't exploit customers, and reinvest in infrastructure. Instead we got shit in rivers and and million pound bonuses to execs.

you’re 3 missed paychecks from being on the streets where you would need the benefits system in place. your child/children were born in an nhs hospital. if you have an accident at work you are taken to an nhs A&E in an nhs ambulance and treated without seeing a bill for any of it

£10 spent on benefits isn't just £10 lost, it's £10 that will then be spent on food, or rent which keeps circulating in the economy. £10 given to big businesses in a tax cut just ends up in a profit margin, or a millionaire shareholders pocket. Its likely never spent again.

Passive income should be taxed at a HIGHER rate than earned income. I don't know why this would be remotely controversial.

Jason Arday’s plagiarism attracted a total of 249 articles, which led to his death.

THIS IS FUCKING OUTRAGEOUS!

It cannot be overstated how every one of these tankers going down either in Europe or the Middle East is its own massive ecological disaster.
Once you add them all up we’re talking about ecocide at that point. We’re killing everything with these wars. Not just us.

We DO NOT in fact have to 'accept severe cyberattacks' as the price of 'freedom'
Sam Altman says society will have to accept severe cyberattacks from open-source AI as the price of preserving freedom
"I support open source models. There is a coming tidal wave of cybersecurity problems that are going to come from these open source models"
"There are people in the industry who say we should ban open source, because otherwise a bunch of systems are going to be hacked"
"We're going to, as a society, I think, have to just accept some fairly severe cyber incidents from open models, in exchange for the liberty that comes with that"

Bethany wore a T-Shirt that said ‘Protect the Dolls’ during #Strictly rehearsals.
After posting a video, the BBC quietly replaced it with a new one that doesn’t show her from the front. During the show, they actually blurred out the T-Shirt completely. Absolutely despicable

In 2015 David Cameron privatised the National Fostering Agency, it's now being paid £160m a year straight to a New Jersey tax haven to manage the fostering of just 2,616 children
A tax free profit of £61,000 per child, and they don't even provide any care, that's the fosters job

When I was at university we had to write an essay about Starbucks and their tax avoidance.
This was in 2012.
Essentially they pay a ‘Royalty and Licence fee’ to a non UK company each year.
This strips out their profits and enables them to avoid almost all corporation tax.
I thought I would check whether things have changed since I wrote the essay back in 2012.
This is the Corporation Tax paid each financial year:
2021: £5.4m
2022: £4.5m
2023: £7.2m
2024: £0m
2025 -£13.7m
Total: £3.4m
Royalty and License Fees:
2021: £26.5m
2022: £34.4m
2023: £40.4m
2024: £40.4m
2025: £43.2m
Total: £184.9m
Assuming a 25% corporation tax rate would be £46.22m in taxes brought in.
If these loopholes were closed off, maybe our personal taxes would be reasonable.
