Thanks @KenRoth for being a consistent defender of scholars and universities free from outside interference by govt, party, or private interests.
Free inquiry and academic freedom serve the public good.
Universities are at the forefront of the critical thinking and scholarship that keeps governments in check, which is why Trump and his ilk have targeted them. Compromising academic freedom weakens democracy, which seems to be his point. trib.al/TJ3ZIMC

Thanks @KenRoth for summary of efforts to defend US democracy, incl by HEd, noting Unis "have largely weathered the storm", "only a handful... cut deals" & none joined a govt compact trading uni autonomy & academic freedom for preferential govt funding.

Where is our prisoner, Ahmadreza Djalali?
A respected doctor. A husband. A father. An innocent man who has endured what no human being should ever endure.
Today & every day, we raise our voices for Ahmadreza.
We call on @MariaStenergard to end this nightmare & #SaveAhmadreza.
We urge @SwedishPM to use every tool at his disposal, leverage Sweden’s alliances, & do whatever necessary to finally #BringDjalaliHome.
Be Ahmadreza’s voice. Sound the alarm over his disappearance & suffering…and keep sounding it until he’s back with his family.
Silence Is Deadly!

Ahmadreza Djalali has suffered a heart attack!
After years of cruel medical neglect, isolation, & psychological torture in Iran, his body is giving out on him. He has been transferred to the hospital wing of Evin Prison — yet despite the gravity of his condition, he has been told he cannot see a cardiologist until Sunday.
Again & again, Ahmadreza is forced to wait: for medical care, for compassion, for his country — and for the international community — to act.
We urgently call on @SwedishPM, @kajakallas, @Europarl_EN, & the int’l community to intervene, NOW, without delay, without excuses!
Ahmadreza needs immediate, life-saving care, & most importantly, he needs to get out of the hell he has been surviving in for the past 9 years!
Your continued silence will cost Djalali his life!

For 70+ yrs, Americans benefited ENORMOUSLY by attracting world class minds to US unis, labs & cos.
US HEd = innovation = patents, prizes & meds = companies & jobs = higher GDP = nat'l security & prestige = better future for kids = better US for ALL US

Recent pressures on US higher ed are not new. Keeping history in mind, link is to annotation of US gov ltr to @Columbia threatening sanctions. Issue is not the need for policy review, it is whether govt should use threats to dictate outcomes. #freetothink

Caution: Justification is not cause. SocSci & HUM are not the cause of state pressures on highered. The paradigm of safe, loyal, or patriotic disciplines v "troublemakers" is a lie, told by authorities to control what ideas are shared w/public.
