Lyn Alden: The entire modern money system is only 55 years old (most people alive today were born before it existed). "It's kind of like this been this grand experiment that the whole world has done." Before the 1970s, money was backed by gold. Now it's just a list of ones and zeros managed by people who can't balance a budget. The question was always whether politicians could run a ledger responsibly. "The answer so far is that in almost every country imbalances slowly grow." FT @LynAldenContact @PeterMcCormack.
Bitwise CEO: People have overestimated $BTC as a payment method in the last 10 years - and are now underestimating it for the next 10. "In order for somebody to want to accept it as payment, they first need to agree that it has value." The world spent 15 years debating whether Bitcoin has value. Once that debate settles - and we're getting closer - the payment use case unlocks naturally. Square just enabled 4M merchants to accept Bitcoin, so the sequence is playing out. FT @HHorsley @KevinWSHPod @Bitwise.

There's no freeze on property tax. There's no freeze on the wages paid to landscapers, plumbers, electricians, drywallers, flooring installers. There's no freeze on the cost of lumber, copper, baseboard, quarter rounds, flashing, siding, window treatments. There's no freeze on the wages paid to janitors or porters. There's no freeze on utilities -- on electric, gas, water, sewer (building-paid utilities in hallways, lobbies, maintenance corridors; most buildings pay water and sewer for tenants). There are currently 57,421 units sitting vacant in NYC because it's more cost-effective to leave them empty than it is to rent them out. If you're wondering: "How that could be possible? Wouldn't making anything be better than making nothing?" -- the answer is no, because of the 2019 Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act. The HSTPA mandated a certain level of renovation for a vacant unit, but did not allow landlords to raise the rent enough to be able to recoup those costs. If a long-term tenant moves out after decades, the apartment often requires $50,000 to $100,000 in lead abatement, new wiring, plumbing, and structural renovations. Because the law heavily restricts how much of that cost can be passed to the next tenant. The HSPTA eliminated the "vacancy bonus" (which allowed automatic 20% rent increases when a tenant left) and heavily capped Individual Apartment Improvements (IAIs). This means landlords who want a renovation loan would be rejected by a bank, because the landlord would not be able to show that they could repay that loan. Landlords who pay out-of-pocket would end up losing money, underperforming even what they could get by putting their money in a U.S. Treasury or gov't bond. Therefore, it's more cost-effective to just leave the unit vacant. That's why we have 57,421 vacant units across New York right now. That number is about to get much worse.

An underrated aspect of $STRC design is that effective yield rises as the price of the security falls. This creates a natural equilibrium wherein it becomes attractive on a risk-adjusted basis, even without Strategy manually adjusting the interest rate. If the primary reason that it is trading down reflects reduction of the USD reserve runway, which is arguably too short at the moment, raising the interest rate could harm the price by shortening that runway. The best near term thing to do may simply be to increase the USD reserve as much as possible and make either small or no upward adjustment to the interest rate. Let the market decide at what effective yield the security is attractive, and give bitcoin time to recover. If the concern is credit quality, signaling “we have the money to service these payments for the foreseeable future” maybe all that is needed. I think right now there is a panicked “rush to the exit” bank run mentality going on which is likely depressing the price well beyond where the market would place it given current credit. There are people who are short the stock, put protection being bought and margin liquidations happening. Increasing the USD reserve and giving the market time for this short-term panic to resolve itself, may be all that is required for a robust recovery. There is a danger in doing too much and having the market react with further panic to the perceived inadequacy of the action taken. It may simply be necessary that in times of extreme near term bitcoin stress, the security trades for extended periods below $100, and the effective yield and market arbitrage helps the price establish a natural equilibrium. It’s very important to remember that this is not a stable coin with a peg. There is no necessity for it to trade at $100 particularly on a day-to-day or even week to week basis. The more they are perceived as having to “defend a peg,” the more opportunistic / panicked reaction the price will attract from hedge funds retail and the like. If you’re short this stock you have a fairly high carrying cost which rises with the effective yield as the price falls. You’re probably hoping that the company does something inadvisable and drives more panic. A steady hand from management simply means that you’re gonna have to pay that cost for an extended period of time and that changes your risk calculus. It can simultaneously be true that Strategy designed a security that has natural mechanisms to target a $100 coupon price and also true that in times of extreme market stress there may be extended periods of dislocation from that price. This can and should impact the way that $MSTR markets $STRC, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that the design of the security is flawed or unstable. It just means that these equilibrium take time to robustly, reinforce in markets, particularly in times of extreme credit stress as we are currently experiencing. There was a quote I believe from Saylor or Phong that “we designed this to bend rather than to break,” and that is likely the best course of action here. Let it bend and let it snap back naturally as panic resolves and a new equilibrium forms. Doing too much will make it brittle.

I attended a wedding last weekend and the bride’s vows mentioned “growing old together” and I started doing the math on Power Law projections through 2055 and accidentally let out an audible gasp during the ceremony because I realized that if she stacks correctly her husband will be financially irrelevant to her by year nine. I tried to play it off as crying. Everyone thought I was moved. I was. I was moved by the realization that marriage, at current adoption velocity, is a hedge.

If you bought the S&P in late 2024 betting on 8-10% returns, you're about to lose a decade of your financial life. Billionaire investor Howard Marks on the JP Morgan chart everyone's ignoring: At the end of 2024, the S&P was at a P/E of 23. Historically, every single time the market hits a P/E of 23, the next 10 years returned between 2% and -2% annualized. NO exceptions. What this means: if you invested $100K at the end of 2024, by 2034 you'll have between $82K and $122K. Best case (2% annualized): you barely beat inflation Worst case (-2% annualized): you lose 18% of your money Either way, high-yield savings beats your "aggressive" portfolio This isn't a bearish prediction. It's a historical certainty based on the price you chose to pay. @thesamparr @ShaanVP
