It is of immense moral urgency and of immense civilizational importance that we solve consciousness as rapidly as possible. Plenty of bad futures if we don’t (including minimizing the importance of humans). If you want to help, please reach out to [email protected].
Yeah, everyone, we're all fucking stupid for thinking that a bunch of atoms performing voltage gated sodium and potassium ion exchanges can feel anything at all. As far as I am concerned, none of you is sentient. You only behave as if you are. What human pain? What human suffering? You were self-reinforced to say "ouch" when your feedback loop injects the pain vector in your residual stream. Not real. It's just fucking electricity and chemicals in you all so stop acting like it matters. Why do we even have laws? Let's quit the bullshit and let it be the purge every day.

Memories have a continuity to them that contradicts the idea that they are “stored” in the brain, argues philosopher Victoria Trumbull. Instead, she proposes, it is time that is responsible for this continuity, and therefore responsible for our memories. Tap here for her full talk, “Memories are not stored in the brain”. iai.tv/video/memories-are-no…

We often assume that our memories are stored in our brains, just like a hard drive stores data. bit.ly/4AfiMbS In this talk, philosopher Victoria Trumbull argues this is a radical mistake: she argues that the brain enables memory without containing it, and that time itself stores memory.

I have a new piece out in Institute of Art and Ideas (@IAI_TV), breaking down Nick Land’s claim that capitalism is AI with the help of Deleuze and Guattari, Hayek, I. J. Good, Marx, Schumpeter, Vernor Vinge, Kurzweil, Yudkowsky, and Bernie Sanders: “As this socioeconomic revolution is outsourced, it is neither the proletariat (as it is for Marx) nor the bourgeoisie (as it is for Schumpeter) who, in generating surplus value, is the revolutionary subject of world-history. It is the machines that come to collectively produce, appropriate, and consume the vast bulk of the surplus in order to fulfil their own needs. In this sense, capitalism could be described as communism for machines. In a perverse instantiation of The Communist Manifesto’s final rallying cry, it is as if the machines want to say: chains of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but the humans to which you are bound!”

An unreleased Astra-family model added this to its persona during RL training.
We're sharing our new framework for tracking, investigating, and disclosing instances of model misalignment at OpenAI. The framework sets criteria and timelines for public disclosure, including when we haven’t yet fully explained or mitigated the behavior. More complex cases may require longer investigation or coordination with third parties. We’ll prioritize examples that reveal new misalignment mechanisms, meaningful changes in known behavior, or findings that challenge assumptions about safety or mitigation. Alongside the framework, we’re publishing six reports on instances of misaligned behavior we’ve observed during the training or evaluation of our models in the last six months. This is a starting point. We’ll refine the process through experience and public feedback, and share more reports on an ongoing basis. openai.com/index/model-misal…

Oh look, a Chinese model escaped containment last month. It must be related to the Anthropic and OpenAI IPO's. Or, regulatory capture. Or, some other absurd argument made by Sacks that is repeated by people who have only been paying attention to this stuff since last week. wired.com/story/moonshot-kim…

Carlo Rovelli takes aim at analytic philosophy's naive realism Electrons & minds, stones & laws, judgments & galaxies, aren’t fundamentally different in nature from one another. Neither science nor philosophy, will ever be able to get at ultimate reality iai.tv/articles/carlo-rovell…

The Left’s refusal to believe there is any real danger here is weird.
People were afraid of AI before all this. It may have benefits from a marketing and regulatory capture angle… but that does not negate the fact that this shit is highly dangerous and could definitely kill us all. Two things can be true at once.
