This morning, our nation pauses to remember the nearly 3,000 people killed on September 11, 2001.
The NYPD holds especially close the memory of the 23 members of the department who were killed at the World Trade Center that morning, and the more than 500 members who later died from illnesses connected to the rescue and recovery effort.
May the memories of all those we have lost be an eternal blessing. And may we always be worthy of the legacy they left in our hands.

This afternoon, two people were stabbed in separate attacks on the Upper West Side. Both victims — an Asian male and a Jewish male — were removed to Mt. Sinai-St. Luke’s Hospital, and both are expected to survive.
The NYPD has arrested 51-year-old Raul Morales in connection with both assaults, and no other people are being sought. Detectives are continuing to work the case and determine motive, but according to victim and witness statements, Morales yelled “Allahu Akbar” during both attacks. The NYPD is currently evaluating whether this is a potential hate crime.
While the perpetrator has no known mental health history with the NYPD, the initial investigation suggests that mental health may have been a factor.
At this time there is no known link between Morales and either of the victims, nor between the victims and each other.
I want to commend the bravery of a good Samaritan who led our officers to the location where the perpetrator was hiding, as well as our NYPD cops who brought an end to the incident without further injuries.

In August 2022, Yahya Sinwar, the powerful leader of Hamas in Gaza, authored a secret war document, envisioning brutal acts of aggression against Israeli civilians and soldiers. He called for militants to destroy civilian neighborhoods by dousing them with gasoline before setting them on fire as well as to broadcast the violent acts so as to evoke fear in Israelis and destabilize the country.
A year later on Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas militants fulfilled Sinwar’s vision, with commanders echoing his words to their subordinates, according to intercepted communications. “Burn, burn,” Abu Muhammed, a commander from Gaza City, said at 9:52A.M. “I want the whole kibbutz to burn down.”
Hamas denied targeting civilians that day but the documentshows that the brutality perpetrated by Hamas was part and parcel of the plan and the intercepts reveals orders Hamas commanders gave militants in real time.
Our investigation also show the extensive efforts that Hamas undertook to broadcast its atrocities to the Arab world in hopes of stoking fear among Israelis and mobilizing people outside Gaza to join the fight.
Put together, they paint a harrowing picture of how Hamas planned and carried out the most devastating attack in Israel’s history.
