In this weekโs Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing the ICMR report, highlighted the indiscriminate use of antibiotics as a key driver of AMR. He cautioned against the widespread belief that a single pill can cure every illness and emphasised that antibiotics must be taken only on the advice of a qualified medical practitioner.
Reiterating the Government of Indiaโs commitment to addressing this challenge, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare @JPNadda, at the launch of the National Action Plan on AMR 2.0, underscored that AMR poses serious risks to modern healthcare, particularly in surgical procedures, cancer treatment and other critical medical interventions. He noted that combating AMR demands collective action across sectors, building on efforts initiated in 2010 and strengthened through the first NAP-AMR launched in 2017.
Strengthening Indiaโs science- and innovation-led response, the India AMR Innovation Hub (IAIH), guided under the @PrinSciAdvOff and anchored at C-CAMP has been designated as the innovation arm of the National Action Plan on AMR 2.0. IAIH is enabling a comprehensive innovation ecosystem by mobilising national and global partnerships, supporting mid- to late-stage technologies, and accelerating scalable solutions across the One Health domains of human, animal, agricultural and environmental health. Through national AMR innovation challenges and collaborations with global partners, IAIH is supporting high-impact solutions including novel therapeutics, rapid diagnostics for resistant pathogens, environmental AMR surveillance tools, and technologies to mitigate antibiotic residues in wastewater.
Highlighting Indiaโs proactive approach, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India Prof. @AjaySoodIISc outlined several key initiatives, including state-level bans on over-the-counter sale of antibiotics in Kerala and Gujarat, and restrictions on the use of certain antimicrobials and pesticides in agriculture. He emphasised that the India AMR Innovation Hub plays a vital role in bringing together government, academia, industry and international stakeholders to foster innovation, mobilise resources and strengthen collaborative action to address the AMR challenge.
