“Just as nearly every letter of Paul begins with thanks, so Blumhardt too in his prayers is always full of praise and thanks. For there is nothing that can lighten our hearts like giving thanks. In giving thanks we are positive; in the face of thanks everything negative and contrary disappears.” —Eugen Jäckh plough.com/articles/prayers-…

There’s something about sunshine that makes kitties love to bask in it. This is our new kitten, Millicent Hazel Jones, Milly for short. She’s doing great. Our older cat, Gilly, is wary and acting a bit put out.

I’ve been thinking about joy lately. Not happiness that depends on everything going right. Something deeper. The resurrection reminds me that death and evil do not have the final word. The victory of Jesus is a victory I get to share in. @pauljpastor @IAmJillPhillips @iamfujimura

Very cool. As we read down, we see a clear articulation of the Trinity well before the Council of Nicaea.
This is the Oxyrhynchus Hymn, dated to the late 200s AD. It is the earliest known Christian hymn manuscript with both lyrics and musical notation. A plain English rendering of the surviving words: “Let all creation be silent. Let the shining stars be still. Let the rushing winds and rivers cease. While we sing to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, let every power answer: Amen, amen. Strength, praise, and glory forever to God, the only giver of all good things. Amen, amen.”

In a little over a week, I'll spend seven days as a Resident Fellow in Oxford, staying at the Kilns, C.S. Lewis's home for much of his adult life, which also houses the C.S. Lewis Study Centre. I look forward to exploring the riches of Lewis's thought, such as exemplified here in this quote, and especially as it relates to the resurrection and the renewal of our imagination. @Plough @KSPrior @WheatonProvost @winncollier @iamfujimura @malcolmguite @pauljpastor @flemingrut
“Abstain from all thinking about other people’s faults, unless your duties as a teacher or parent make it necessary to think about them. Whenever the thoughts come unnecessarily into one’s mind, why not simply shove them away? And think of one’s own faults instead? For there, with God’s help, one can do something.” —C. S. Honored by these kind words from @KSPrior regarding The Crystal Hand, which will publish in December from the wonderful @WisebloodBooks. Today's a great day to order a copy or two in time for holiday gifts!

Sometimes prayer begins with noticing. The crispness of the morning. A change in the light. A beautiful moment we might otherwise rush past. God's goodness is often closer than we realize. What have you noticed today? @amymantravadi @sandramccracken @therabbitroom

Sometimes faith isn’t about having an answer. It’s about knowing where to turn when we don’t have one. God invites us to know him, to relate to him more deeply. And that relationship matters most when life doesn't go according to plan. @annvoskamp @bethfelkerjones @marianipaul

Here I am last week at Rabbit Room's Annual Hutchmoot gathering near Nashville, co-presenting with Matt Wheeler our session on "The Ache Beneath the Art." We talked about how vulnerable you make yourself whenever you create and then share your work with others. And habits and practices, spiritual and otherwise, for doing it anyway. The room was full and the comments from engaged participants felt gratifying. @KSPrior @TheRabbitRoom @NelsonBooks @mockingbirdmin @HootenWilson

Rejection comes in many forms, and its hurt can run deep. Jesus knew rejection, too. He understands our heartache. And in him, rejection cannot erase the truth of our belovedness. We are fully beloved. @iamculturecare @nelsonbooks @bethmoorelpm

“Story is the most natural way of enlarging and deepening our sense of reality, and then enlisting us as participants in it. Stories open doors to areas or aspects of life we didn’t know were there, or had quit noticing out of over-familiarity, or supposed were out-of-bounds to us. They welcome us in.” -Eugene Peterson @bethfelkerjones @joshualukesmith @pauljpastor

Who is someone whose love you still carry with you? Sometimes remembering how someone loved us helps us remember that we are loved. @pauljpastor @iamjillphillips @iamfujimura

This post seems so simple and yet I think it's true. And if we pause in the midst of persistent questions about our worth or worthiness, a seemingly small memory might turn the tide.

This past July I had the fun experience of co-leading a panel for an event co-sponsored by the Rabbit Room and WriterFest Nashville. Our theme: The Story behind the Story. I’m the guy on the left! Co-convener Melissa Collings is on the right. In between are great folks from the world of video/movie production, fiction writing, and music. So much creativity happens in Nashville and surrounds. @TheRabbitRoom @WriterFestNSH @MelissaColling8 @iamculturecare

I'm late catching up on posting summer doings. Here I am in Boston just before the Red Sox finally won a game. (They actually went on to have a good season.) I'm with my son, Abram, on photo left and my friend Kevin Miller, right. @marcelfreire @CMaxMan
