Hey, people of X, I need your help. I am building a media publication that tries to answer one question: what does it mean to be an immigrant? It's called The Newcomers. If you know someone who might find it useful, please share it with them. thenewcomerspod.com/

Confession: When I need fresh ideas, I step outside the marketing bubble. One of my favorite places to learn is by studying successful creators. That's why I was excited to chat with one popular YouTuber with over 1.1 million subscribers on the latest episode of the @RemoteWorkTribe podcast. If you are interested in learning more about storytelling or YouTube, this episode is worth a listen. theremoteworktribe.com/2024/…

A test to determine if you're pursuing something that you actually want: If you could never tell anyone about what you are trying to accomplish, would you still want to pursue it? If not, you might just be chasing status

A period of stagnation is a normal part of growth. Sadly, most people want to give up at that stage.

I used to need a lot of external validation from others, but when I worked with Seth Godin, he refused to give me that validation. He said I had to create it for myself. At first, it was painful because I wasn’t sure if I was building the right thing or making the right decisions. He said he didn’t know either, but I didn’t believe him. I thought, "Surely a marketing legend would know the right thing to do, right? Right??" I said, “Okay, I get it... But if making me struggle is a vague buddha teaching moment, this seems borderline irresponsible given the stakes. So you should just tell me if I’m on the right track." Still, nothing. The lack of validation drove me nuts. But eventually, I learned to validate myself. I learned to live with the tension of making a decision that will have consequences (every decision does) and not knowing if it’ll work, which is what every founder and leader has to carry. And I learned to be super pleased with myself when I do something well. I don't need someone else to say, "Wes, that was awesome." I celebrate accomplishments big and small in my own mind. For example, a well-crafted Slack message. This might seem small to others, but in my head, I’m like “Damn that was a good response. Nice job Wes.” This emotional validation can happen *from yourself, for yourself.* Was it infuriating not to get reassurance I felt like would have been easy for Seth Godin to give, and would have meant the world to me at the time? Yes. Is it liberating to feel deep pride for a piece of work I did, regardless of who else praises it? Definitely.

When faced with a choice, go with the option that surrounds you with people you respect, who understand you and share your values. I’ve found this to be a helpful reminder when at a crossroads.

When you start a business — hopefully by picking an audience you really want to empower — know that this is going to be a multi-year commitment. Be ready to identify with the business for a long time.

Lesson: Don't end the hiring process after the interview. You're probably getting several great candidates for every job opening Treat recruiting like a sales process, and nurture the relationships with your best candidates

And we have reached the end of the cycle where 1995 cubicles are becoming cool again Took 28 years I am convinced trends somehow happen in 7 year periods 1995-2002 cubicles good 2009-2016 cubicles bad -> open offices good 2016-2023 open offices annoying 2023-2030 open offices bad -> cubicles good again
Is it just me or does this look incredible

Don’t be a threadboi 🧵 Instead write your honest stories and life and work updates on here and be vulnerable The stories that make you different because everyone has their own unique story to tell Posting the same stuff as every other threadboi will just get you low quality followers on here And then when you launch something to your 100,000 threadboi followers, they won’t buy your thing because they don’t give a shit about you Because you never built a personal connection Be a realboi
