The view from the Board of Regents Room in Quezon Hall, the administration building of the UP System, reveals the campus core of the UP Diliman (aka Diliman Republic) as a beautiful and well-manicured place—a vast green lung within the dense and often intense Metropolitan Manila.

From heterodoxy to justice, from reflexivity to situated knowledge.
IJURR’s editors offer a collective reflection on the role of critical urban studies today.

This piece—EPISTEMIC JUSTICE AND THE UNIVERSITY—is an offshoot of collective and individual reflections on our experiences as international early career scholars working in/for “world-class neoliberal universities”. Stephanie, Tanzil, Ishita & I began talking about this thinking-
This essay by @_stephbutcher, @TanzilShafique, @RedenRecio & Ishita Chatterjee challenges notions of 'ethics', 'engagement' and 'excellence', developing three ‘intentionalities’ for reclaiming the university as a site of justice tinyurl.com/4juw82bh
In this recently published book, Kim Dovey and I explain a spatial logic of informal urbanism that is central to the economic life and urban livelihoods in highly ‘informalized cities’ of the global South, which are often portrayed as ‘chaotic’ and out of control.
We deploy the notion of 'inventraset' to show how informal street vending, transport and settlement are fundamentally integrated with each other and the more formal city.
We argue that such ‘spatial logic’ of urban informalities is underpinned by several intersecting factors: market + capital, governance regimes, urban morphology, and image + visibility.

"Why would a university that values academic freedom and its tradition of social criticism sign a “declaration of cooperation” with the military? Such a declaration whitewashes the escalating repression in UP and other schools..."

This morning I would like to lift up the statement issued by UCLA students on the night of April 30. I am haunted by this line: “The university would rather see us dead than divest.” I want to remind us all of their demands, those for which our students have risked everything.
The 2nd instalment of the two-part special issue (SI) on disaster justice is now out! 📷 philippinestudies.net

Happy to have guest edited this SI with @kairazoe & @anthropam . To celebrate the International Women’s Month, this SI features articles
written by women scholars (@kairazoe , Regina Macalandag, & Liberty de Rivera) and and interviews with three women practitioners. The frameworks, findings + insights foreground the importance of care, empathy, listening, and place-based knowledges in enriching disaster justice.
Many thanks to the @iampshev Team led by Mike Pante for the opportunity to collaborate on this three-year project. Tagay! 🙂🍺
