I've been a broken record on why school vouchers are turning out to be a real liability for the GOP in Texas (and beyond). Nice to see the NYT pick up on this.

Teacher turnover is the key barrier to expanding childcare. “Currently they make less than food service workers and parking lot attendants and we know, because they receive less, you get high turnover” said our state Superintendent Conway at the Child Care Summit with @VECF_Ready

Today, Gov. Hochul announced that New York State will opt into the Trump administration's voucher program. Giving up local control of public education to the federal government through this scheme is a failure of leadership. Gov. Hochul will bear the responsibility, but our students, educators, and families will bear the price. The UFT is disappointed in this decision and we will continue to stand with parents, educators and public school supporters to do what we can to roll back this policy and protect our classrooms. Full statement: uft.org/news/press-releases/…

ALT The image features the UFT logo at the top against a blue background. Below is a quote from Michael Mulgrew, UFT President, criticizing the transfer of local education control to the federal government through the Trump administration's private school voucher scheme. The quote highlights concerns about leadership and the impact on students, educators, and families.

There's a lot we still don't know about how Trump's school voucher program is going to impact public schools. But seems pretty telling that the most hopeful vision looks like Spirit Airlines. chalkbeat.org/2026/09/30/how…

Voucher programs go against the idea that every student, regardless of zip code, deserves a high-quality education. Private schools that accept voucher dollars can legally turn away students with disabilities or on the basis of religion or sexuality. We’ve seen these issues time and again - that’s why community and labor organizations are calling on Gov. Hochul to #OptOutNow and keep federal vouchers out of New York!
