Bring Back Emotion: Using Psychology for Trading, Investing and Risk: an article from @scottdclary for @hackernoon "The idea of making a decision based solely on data was attractive; it lets people think that they were making the best moves no matter what their heart was telling them. What if I were to tell you that line of thinking is completely backward, and that some of the most successful fund managers in the world know it? Denise Shull, the founder of The Rethink Group, spoke with me about a new way to understand and embrace the value of your emotions — even your negative ones — to make better decisions, set probabilities, or succeed in previously unattainable areas. 'I honestly think the analogy is round earth-flat earth. It looks like emotions get in your way, just like it looks like the Earth is flat. But it’s a misunderstanding of how it’s really working.'" hackernoon.com/bring-back-em…

Leveraging Your Brain Predictions to Accomplish 2024 Goals🧠 Want to get more "disciplined?" Want to follow through on the goals you set for yourself? Learn to understand what you are feeling and why, with an emphasis on the feeling *beneath* the feeling-- the future emotion you are predicting. In other words, leverage your predictions. First, work backwards from your goal. What would you need to do to get there? Weigh your decisions with that end goal in mind. Now, you might feel good doing x now, but how will you feel in the future? By doing x now, what am I expecting to feel? Will doing x get you closer to your goal? Think about short term vs long term expected feelings. Make decisions in the present with your future self in mind. Additionally, try to set up small wins for yourself to gain confidence. You can learn to create new emotional experiences and therefore update your beliefs and predictions. You can learn to expect success from yourself. Any endeavor is likely to be more successful if we define our goals, priorities, and strategies before we start taking action. Thoughtful analysis, in the long run, is faster and more efficient.

Sunlight: A Real "Quick Fix" 🌱🌞 Want to make a simple change to improve your health? Start getting more sunlight. (An excerpt from our latest newsletter-- sign up here: therethinkgroup.net/subscrib…) When it comes to health, sunlight is your best friend. Take off your sunglasses and get light into your eyes - particularly first thing in the morning. Go outside BEFORE you check your phone or computer. You just might find that you sleep better, have more energy and even lose weight without doing anything else. Yeah, yeah. I know. This sounds even nuttier than my usual admonitions to think of your emotions as information. So before you quit reading, think about it. You've heard of circadian rhythms. You've probably experienced a bit of trouble with it (even on a flight as short as from coast to coast in the US). But really, what are these “circadian rhythms”? Why should we care? Every cell in your body runs on an internal clock—our circadian rhythms. These rhythms, which follow a 24-hour cycle, are not random. They are crucial to our biology, influencing everything from our sleep-wake cycles and hormone release to eating habits and digestion. In the most basic sense, circadian rhythms help determine when we feel alert or sleepy. However, they also play a significant role in regulating our metabolism, immune function, and mental health. These internal cycles rely on external cues to help your body know “when it’s time to do what.” One of the biggest cues is light—both in terms of time of day and type of light-- which is why exposure to natural light, particularly in the morning, can have such a profound impact on our overall well-being. Doing so helps your body get “in sync” so that you feel the right things at the right time of day. ... Inspired by @QuantumHealthTV

Wall Street's Loneliness Crisis: @DeniseKShull for @BusinessInsider "A lot of them don't have any experience with any sort of failure. Some of the loneliness comes from this — it's all new, it feels bad, it's scary, and they don't feel like they can talk to anyone. They don't feel like they can be honest," she said. "You might feel like you're somewhat good buddies with this other analyst that you started with, but you're not really going to tell them you doubt yourself." ... Shull said that even financiers with partners or families may feel isolated. "I've had analysts tell me their girlfriends will be like, why are you doing this job? You're so stressed out," Shull said. "I often hear that they don't feel understood or supported by their family or their girlfriends." businessinsider.com/how-wall…
