How and why what we do: 🧵... Seems like we think (analyze) and then we do (choose). We actually feel first (middle and last). The feelings provide both context and summarize our analyses.

Soros Fund Management launched when George Soros was 43. Julian Robertson didn’t start Tiger until he was 48. Jim Simons was 50 when he started the Medallion fund. By pretty much any measure, these three belong in the top 5 or 10 best hedge fund managers ever. Things to keep in mind if you haven’t hit your stride by ~30.

BREAKING: Pentagon prepares every major US military base to operate for at least 90 days without outside electricity, fuel, water or supplies, anticipating a major war that could cripple power grids, break global supply chains and threaten critical infrastructure on US soil, per Fox News.
The plans include portable nuclear reactors, large-scale battery storage and microgrids able to disconnect installations from the civilian electrical grid entirely.

A 39-year-old woman was sexually assaulted at knife point in Central Park last night. At 8:30 p.m.
This comes just one week after a 32-year-old woman who was biking through the park—and stopped to pick up earbuds that had fallen—was ambushed by three men and punched in the head.
Violence against women has surged under Letitia James — up 41% in NYC — making us all less safe and less free. Women now worry about riding the train home from work, taking a jog in the park, and walking around their own neighborhoods at night.
It’s time for a change at AG.

Dr. Sabine Hazan said something every cancer patient should hear.
In aggressive cancers caught early, before any chemo, she keeps finding the same thing: zero bifidobacteria.
She tracked it in the patients Mel Gibson mentioned on Rogan, and in her own ovarian cancer patient who’s now in remission.
Her take: support the gut, and you may tolerate chemo and radiation better.
She’s honest that the big studies still need to be done. But nobody is even looking at this. Why isn’t every oncologist testing the microbiome?

2 unrelated medical observations:
1. Last week, a friend's 11 yr old grandson woke up w/stomach problems, stomach got distended, passed out. EMS said he'd had a heart attack. When he got to hospital they said he'd be ok.
He had very high magnesium levels. He had been "eating magnesium gummies to help him sleep." I don't know how many or for how long.
He had more heart attacks and died that day.
Such a tragedy! I googled it, and other kids have died after eating magnesium gummies.
2. Also last week, I accompanied a 30-year old friend to the ER for chest pain.
Not one person the whole time asked this person if she'd had Covid vaccine(s), let alone how many, which kind, and when--all this should be standard screening.
Additionally, they should ask when her last known bout of Covid was, and collect and report all that info to the federal database so we can rule in and rule out adverse events, help prevent them, and develop treatments.
(She turned out to be okay.)

DAY 8: Circadian analysis of Andrew Huberman @hubermanlab
⠀
He's the guy who made "get morning sunlight" a household phrase.
⠀
But does he actually live like it? Mostly, yes.
⠀
Sleep: 8/10
⠀
He knows his number and sticks to it:
⠀
• 7 hours feels great
• 8 leaves him a little groggy
• Two nights in a row of 4 hours or less and he's "cratered"
⠀
He usually wakes up on his own, no alarm.
⠀
His one weak spot, by his own admission, is getting his mind to stop running long enough to fall asleep. On short nights, he uses non-sleep deep rest the next morning to make up ground.
⠀
Nighttime darkness: 7/10
⠀
At home he does it right. Dim, warm lights in the evening, fewer screens before bed. He's even said dim mornings with bright nights is "the worst way to go."
⠀
But this fall he's been doing live events for his new book Protocols. 7:30pm shows in New York, LA and San Francisco, hours under bright stage lights right when his brain should be winding down.
⠀
And your eyes are at their most sensitive to light in the evening.
⠀
Morning timing: 9/10
⠀
He wakes up around 6am, and it barely moves day to day.
⠀
That's exactly what he preaches. A steady wake time keeps your cortisol rise landing at the same time every morning instead of drifting around.
⠀
Morning light: 10/10
⠀
This is his whole brand, and he walks the walk. Outside within the first hour of waking, usually walking, no sunglasses.
⠀
He's even updated his own advice. He now says "get daylight in your eyes" instead of "sunlight," because people kept skipping it on cloudy days.
⠀
Even an overcast sky is way brighter than indoor light.
⠀
Daytime light: 7/10
⠀
His routine calls for getting outside again around midday, which most people never do.
⠀
But a lot of his work is recording long podcast episodes indoors. Indoor light is a fraction of what your brain gets outside, even on a gray day.
⠀
Evening light: 9/10
⠀
He makes a point of getting outside before sunset.
⠀
That low evening light gives your clock a second reference point, and it makes you less sensitive to artificial light later at night.
⠀
Travel: 7/10
⠀
Mostly West Coast life. But the book events had him in New York in September, three time zones east, then LA in October, with San Francisco on the 28th.
⠀
Flying east is the harder direction for your clock. Still, a couple of domestic trips is nothing compared to some people on this board.
⠀
Location: 8/10
⠀
He's based in the LA area. Sunny mornings almost all year and plenty of daylight even in winter.
⠀
Few places make his whole protocol easier to follow.
⠀
Overall: 8.1/10
⠀
The guy who made morning sunlight famous actually does it, and it shows.
⠀
Fewer nights on stage and more hours out of the studio, and he'd be untouchable.
⠀
Circadian leaderboard so far:
⠀
1. Andrew Huberman: 8.1/10
2. Bryan Johnson: 7.9/10
3. Mark Wahlberg: 6.7/10
4. LeBron James: 5.3/10
5. Sydney Sweeney: 5.0/10
6. Donald Trump: 4.0/10
7. Elon Musk: 3.2/10
8. MrBeast: 3.0/10

DAY 7: Circadian analysis of Mark Wahlberg
⠀
Mark Wahlberg is famous for one of the most extreme schedules in Hollywood.
Everyone talks about Mark Wahlberg's 3:30am alarm.
But the more impressive part is the other end of his day.
He's in bed by 7:30 and gets a full eight hours every single night.
So how does his circadian health actually score?
⠀
Sleep: 9/10
⠀
For all the jokes about his alarm, he protects his sleep better than almost anyone on this leaderboard.
He's in bed around 7:30, sometimes just before 8, and he's said he always gets at least eight hours.
In his words, sleep is just as important as exercise, if not more.
⠀
That full eight hours matters.
Night is when your body switches from running the day to repairing it, burning fat and making the ketones that drive the cleanup work.
He gives that window its full length every single night.
⠀
Nighttime darkness: 8/10
⠀
When you're in bed at 7:30, there's basically no room for late night screens or bright lights.
On top of that, he's said he eats all his food in a six-hour window from noon to 6pm, so his kitchen is closed long before dark.
⠀
Your organs have their own clocks, and they're built to handle food during daylight, so that early cutoff lines up nicely.
The one catch is summer.
In Las Vegas the sun doesn't set until around 8pm in June, so he's lying down before it's even dark out, and his bedroom has to do all the work to get his brain into melatonin mode.
⠀
Morning timing: 9/10
⠀
Whatever you think of 3:30am, it's consistent.
He's held roughly the same wake time for years, just shifted from his old 2:30am alarm to 3:30.
Even on his days off, his idea of sleeping in is 4:30.
⠀
Your clock loves a wake time that barely moves.
It's what lets your cortisol spike land at the same time every morning instead of drifting around.
⠀
Morning light: 4/10
⠀
This is where the 3:30 alarm costs him.
Prayer, reading and his famous "4am club" workouts at the gym all happen hours before the sun comes up, under artificial light.
In late October, sunrise in Vegas isn't until almost 7am.
⠀
The cells that set your clock evolved to read a slow 60 to 90 minute ramp from darkness to full daylight.
Gym lights just flip on at one flat brightness.
The fix is easy though. When you're up before sunrise, use bright lights indoors, then get outside once the sun actually comes up.
⠀
Daytime light: 6/10
⠀
In his free time he's said he likes to golf and swim in a lake, which is real time in full daylight.
But a lot of his days are spent on film sets, in meetings, and building out his new gym in Summerlin.
⠀
Even a cloudy day outside is at least 10,000 lux, compared to around 500 indoors.
And set lights are bright, but they're not the sun, missing most of the red and infrared you'd get outside.
⠀
Travel: 3/10
⠀
This year he spent about three months filming Netflix's The Big Fix, starting in Sydney, where the clock is 17 hours ahead of Vegas, then finishing with two weeks in Penang, Malaysia in July.
After that it was back home and off to LA for his movie's premiere.
⠀
Every big time zone jump leaves your clock running on the place you just left.
And when your whole routine is built around a 3:30am alarm, landing somewhere 17 hours off makes it a lot harder to hold onto.
⠀
Location: 8/10
⠀
He moved his family from LA to Summerlin, just outside Las Vegas, in 2022 and is still there, and you don't get much more sunshine than the desert.
⠀
It's also far enough south that the winter sun still has some real strength to it, unlike most of the northern US where UVB pretty much disappears in the cold months.
⠀
Overall: 6.7/10
⠀
He's got the sleep discipline of a monk and lives in one of the sunniest places in the country.
If he stepped outside once the sun came up and spent less time crossing the planet, he'd be coming for Bryan Johnson's top spot.
⠀
Circadian leaderboard so far:
⠀

2. Mark Wahlberg: 6.7/10
3. LeBron James: 5.3/10
4. Sydney Sweeney: 5.0/10
5. Donald Trump: 4.0/10
6. Elon Musk: 3.2/10

This is fact gathering but also intuition and theory of mind at work.
When you are live on an earnings call and the CEO or CFO pauses for five seconds before answering a question about accounts receivables, you feel something. You cannot explain it cleanly. You just know that pause meant something. Read the transcript two hours later and that pause is gone entirely. The transcript says he answered the question. It does not say he needed five seconds to decide how.
When you visit management in person and the receptionist has been there for twenty-two years, that tells you something. When the parking lot is full at 4pm on a Friday, that tells you something. When the CEO walks you through the factory floor and he has unscripted personal dialogue with the line workers with what looks like genuine respect rather than performed deference, that tells you something significant about how this place operates.
None of that is in the 10-K.
