#AirPollution doesn't respect party political, council or constituency boundaries. Depending on winds, projected plume from Preston incinerator reaches us all. #StopPrestonIncinerator 🔥🏭☣️😷

For the next 4 days, we will be releasing fact sheets detailing the problems with "waste-to-energy" incinerators around the world.
First up is Attero Moerdijk Facility from the Netherlands, an expensive waste trap!
This facility tied the municipality into a contract requiring 510,000 MT of waste annually. But when the city's improved waste separation reduced material sent to the incinerator, it had to pay the company $17 million USD-- a penalty for not being wasteful enough! This example shows how incinerator contracts can undermine municipal efforts to reduce waste.

⚠️Here are *just* five reasons why waste burning is not a climate solution.
From releasing greenhouse gases and toxic pollutants to burning valuable resources, wasting public funds, and threatening communities, so-called “waste-to-energy” comes at a high cost to people and the planet.
Ahead of the Global Week of Action to Stop Incineration (October 13–16) tomorrow, read our latest publication, Waste-burning 101: What You Need to Know About So-called Waste-to-Energy, to learn more about the impacts of waste burning and why zero waste is the solution we need.

Our new publication, The Burn Book: Incinerators that Threaten the Climate, Public Health, and Our Finances, exposes the facts behind the harms of waste burning.
⚠︎ These incinerators alone produce at least 1.7 million tons of toxic ash per year– or the weight of 230 Eiffel Towers.
🚨The 11 plants with GHG emissions data release a cumulative 5.5 million metric tons of CO2e per year, same as 1.3 million passenger cars.
💸The twenty incinerators profiled have racked up nearly $7 billion of investments to date-- a portion directly from taxpayers.

Today the UK Government announced a stronger target for reducing PM2.5 #AirPollution, committing to reach interim @WHO guidelines by 2030 ✔️🙌
This is great step forward, bringing the UK in line with the EU's target. But there's more to do, as NO2 levels in the country remain 4x higher than WHO guideline levels.

ALT Graphic quoting Jane Burston, CEO of Clean Air Fund, reading "Bringing forward the UK's particulate matter target is a positive first step, but it falls short without action on toxic nitrogen dioxide. We cannot protect people’s health unless the government tackles all harmful pollutants with the urgency this crisis demands."

The government environmental improvement plan is out and they are bringing air pollution rules back in line with the EU- limiting harmful PM2.5 pollution to 10 micrograms per cubic metre by December 2030. Our prev target was to meet that in 2040 and limit to 25 before then
