If they arm teachers, trust me that training will be a website where you click through minilessons & get a little certificate after like 25 minutes, & we will be forced to do it in a staff meeting after school when we’re already tired, & the DOE will say we were all fully trained – at Brooklyn, NY
I am so proud of my friend Mikey Baratz for this measured, kind, empathetic interview he gave about his friend, the detainee and Columbia student Mohsen Mahdawi.
This quote Omar Jimenez highlights is my favorite thing Mikey said.
"The ability to hear things that are uncomfortable or painful or just make us feel bad is important. And that's a foundation of our democracy today and Mohsen embodied that," says Mikey Baratz, a friend of Mohsen Mahdawi who was a prominent organizer of pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University.
Fucking fabulous. Throw the book at him.

This quote has been breaking my heart since yesterday. It’s like he’s been waiting for this to happen, like it’s to be expected someday. And honestly, I get it. #Appalachee 💔

The children who died eleven years ago at #SandyHook would be seniors now. Their teachers would still be teaching, or they’d be happily retired. 💔
Even after my hopefully soon departure from this godforsaken career, I will always love teachers madly.

Me, to 13-year-olds during freezing fire drill: Whose voice do you need to hear in an emergency?
13-year-old: Yours?
Me: Correct, so stop talking.
13-year-old: Ms. Rear?
Me: Yes, child?
13-year-old: This might not be the right time, but you have killer fashion.
Me: I'll allow it.
Thank you to @585mag for including #CatchTheSparrow in your holiday book guide! I do feel such a connection to the Rochester area, so this means a lot.

The teacher's workday is not designed for us to create or even modify curriculum. This is why boxed programs are the easiest way for teachers to stay working within contract hours AND the biggest threat to effective instruction.
This is one of the most upsetting things I’ve seen regarding this fiasco. And Rosie is like gently editorializing while trying to get them to stfu. Cringe turned to 11.

Thanks for including FROM A WHISPER TO A RALLYING CRY by @PaulaYoo! Great addition to a curriculum of true crime nonfiction for young adults.
So heartened that my sabbatical research project has been published in @VoicesNCTE! True crime for young adults is a mostly unexplored genre with a lot of value. #TrueCrime #YA @PaulaYoo @DashkaSlater @Chessy_Prout publicationsncte.org/content…
