On this Nurses Day of Action, I encourage all nurses, and those who support us, to join with me in urging Congress to pass laws that address the physical and emotional safety of nurses and health care professionals everywhere. Health care workers are assaulted on the job and suffer through mental health struggles more than any other segment of the U.S. workforce, according to the CDC. Simply put, nurses need to be protected from workplace violence, and they need to feel emotionally safe. Reauthorizing the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act will mean more support, more research and more shared expertise to prevent suicide, burnout and mental fatigue among those who care for patients every day. The Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act would lead to a national standard, with all health care employers implementing workplace violence prevention plans and ensuring employees are appropriately trained in identifying and addressing hazards, as well as their rights. We proudly stand with the American Nurses Association, the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation and other organizations who say, “Care goes both ways.” Call your lawmakers, or send a message through the EN411 Action Network, to let them know where you stand on these issues. Learn more at ena.org/advocacy. — ENA President Ryan Oglesby
