A conman from Illinois goes around to Midwestern towns and tries to soak them for as much public money as he can before moving on. He’s eventually caught by a plot point based in Gary, Indiana which makes no logical sense.
This is the plot of The Music Man.

I was talking to my son about WPP making their staff come in 4 days a week.
I said "I loved working in an office, I'd love to come in 4 days a week".
He said they don't mean offices like your day, they mean open plan and hot-desking.
I said "In that case they can fuck off"

Clients keep talking about how they need more brand building, how they overinvested in 1:1/direct marketing, how they have to do bigger, bolder, more emotional work.
And ad agencies keep talking about AI--which isn't good at any of those things.
I don't get it.

Have had Jersey Mike’s 3 times in the past 2 weeks to remember what it tastes like before the inevitable fall.
I predict that the first thing to go will be their paper bags. They are great quality, sturdy, with lots of branding (ink is expensive). Something to “optimize” 😐

We lost something when great creative minds in advertising were forced to transition from “let’s make this brand famous and meaningful” to “let’s make this brand relevant to the right person, at the right, time, at the right place, when they are in the purchase mindset.”

As hard as it is to create something great, it is exponentially more challenging to scale something great. Remember this the next time someone pushes an idea because it’s easy to scale.

The reason the White Sox are down 6-0 already is because they don't have a stadium which allows them to be competitive.

Brands who live or die by whatever's trending that day are the literal definition of an identity crisis.

A proper art director would have sorted it so the Pepsi line was as big as Coke: (half page) TASTES OK (half page) TASTES BETTER.
Pepsi does it's ads in-house and this is what happens when marketing thinks it can do layouts.
Is using your competitor's brand assets a wise move?
The ‘Tastes OK’ campaign looks to poke fun at Diet Coke by using letters from their competitor's name. But is it wise to heavily feature your main competitor's brand assets in your advertising? We researched a debranded version of the advert (by removing the brand name), and more people actually attributed it to Coca-Cola than to Pepsi! Our key takeouts
🛑 It shouldn’t need to be said but don’t utilise your competitor's Distinctive Brand Assets in your advertising, especially one that is bigger and more salient.
🍾 Power of product – We see time and time again that adverts that feature products get higher brand attribution scores. Sometimes this point can get lost in the aim of creating beautiful award-winning advertising, but if you truly want to make effective advertising, lean on your product as much as possible.
🔎 Logo blind spot – Logos can be blind spots, especially when hidden away in the bottom corner. Not to mention, consumers are often just passively scrolling their news feed, while simultaneously passively coming into contact with advertising when commuting or watching TV, you need more than a logo to be consigned to memory.
