The sheer scale of the rental affordability crisis has been well and truly highlighted. When will Government set about solving it? It’s grim reading, but here’s the Anglicare 2024 Rental Affordability Snapshot: bit.ly/3WfJNus

REIA has welcomed todays National Cabinet decisions, especially:
🏡 An emphatic rejection of rent freeze + rent controls
🏡 A sensible plan for States to help renters, particulary DV victims
🏡 A plan to move our planning system from NIMBI to YIMBI!
Time to get to work ⬇️

Why freezing rents would do more harm than good. My latest in @smh with @joeybmoloney on how national cabinet should and should not tackle the rental crisis.
We should strengthen rental protections, raise rent assistance and boost housing supply.

In March 2021 @VictorianLabor introduce 133 new tenancy laws in Victoria. Some were overdue & welcomed by both stakeholders offering improved safety & quiet enjoyment for the tenant. But many of these reforms according to the property owner went too far.
The Andrews Government was warned, the unintended consequences would result in
- less rental properties
- higher rents
- Increased homelessness
This vacancy rate graph is undeniable in the negative impact it's had on renters, with all three scenarios playing out.
Yet to the amazement many, after also now hitting landlords with a special Covid land tax levy, they are now considering a Rental Freeze.
Can the Andrews Govt explain why this would be a good idea, given they are driving property investors out? @abcnews @AustralianLabor @FinancialReview @theheraldsun @theage #Auspol2023
