On October 9, 2026, a witness named Sumathipala Suresh Kumar (alias Thavendran "Murali"), a former LTTE cadre who surrendered to the Sri Lankan Army in May 2009, stood before a three-member bench of the Colombo High Court. He testified that Prageeth Eknaligoda had proposed firing a missile at an aircraft carrying President Mahinda Rajapaksa and other senior government officials. The testimony was given during cross-examination in the ongoing case concerning Eknaligoda's disappearance on January 24, 2010. According to Kumar, the conversation took place during a meeting at a garden in Habarana. Kumar testified that Eknaligoda told him that the rulers at the time should be driven out and massacred, adding that missiles should be fired. A second individual, identified only as "Nadan," was also reportedly present at the meeting. This testimony adds another layer to a case that the international press freedom community has treated as one-dimensional: journalist writes about chemical weapons, state disappears journalist, case closed. Yet the Criminal Investigation Department's (CID) own investigation has revealed the reality to be far more complex, troubling, and inconvenient to the narrative that Amnesty International, the Committee to Protect Journalists, and Reporters Without Borders have promoted for over a decade. The CID concluded that journalism was not the primary reason for Eknaligoda's activities. The CID found that Eknaligoda was involved in passport forgery and human smuggling. The CID also found that he was involved in a coordinated campaign of mailing ash from across the island to President Mahinda Rajapaksa on the pretext that it was cremated human remains, a campaign that the CID described as "well-concocted by certain members who opposed former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and handsomely funded." Furthermore, the CID noted that Eknaligoda had supplied a few cartoons to the Lanka e-News website in 2005, but thereafter had no record of work appearing in any newspaper or electronic media. Additionally, a leaked US diplomatic cable from Ambassador Robert Blake confirmed that medical teams from both the ICRC and the Indian High Commissioner found no evidence of the chemical weapons use that Eknaligoda had purportedly been "investigating." Now add the missile testimony. A former LTTE cadre, testifying under oath in the High Court, stated that Eknaligoda discussed assassinating the sitting President by firing a missile at his aircraft. When pressed on interpretation, Kumar clarified that Eknaligoda "referred to the hypothetical scenario as a mere example illustrating his conversational style." But the question is not whether the missile proposal was a realistic operational plan. The question is what kind of "journalist" sits in a garden in Habarana with a former LTTE intelligence operative and discusses (even hypothetically, even as an example of "conversational style") the assassination of a sitting president by missile strike. What emerges from sixteen years of investigation, testimony, and reporting is a portrait of Prageeth Eknaligoda that defies neat categorization. He was not the unblemished journalist-martyr that international organizations describe, nor was he the LTTE terrorist that the Rajapaksa government's defenders make him out to be. He was something far more complicated: a man operating at the murky intersection of journalism, political activism, intelligence operations, and the LTTE's broader network of influence.
