After 68 weeks of writing about Winds of Yawanawá by @refikanadol and the Yawanawá people, here is my synthesis on why AI art is truly art and why it should not be dismissed as just a complex screensaver @jerrysaltz A thread 🧵 👇

Dear friends, Infinity Room is one of the most special and deeply meaningful artworks at @datalandmuseum , a living story inspired by Yawanawa Family. I’m grateful to Chief Nixiwaka and Putanny of Yawanawa People and all family for their teachings, for their wisdom and hope for humanity.

Punks are art. Here’s why. Let’s go back in time. Imagine Picasso in 2017 painting 10k portraits. Digitize them all. Put them onchain in the exact same kind of contract LL did. Call them CryptoPunks. No one would argue whether the 10k paintings are art or not because of the provenance of a grand master. But it wouldn’t necessarily be the images themselves that were creative. Painting portraits in 2017 wouldn’t exactly be groundbreaking in the timeline of art history. What people would point to would be the technique, the conceptuality, the pioneering of digital ownership. Showing people coding can become art. Showing a marketplace can become the symbol of freedom to transact. That was quite a statement. Not simply having an early onchain timestamp, but the greatness of the vision. Showing others, this is the way to do it. Leading a culture to develop around it. Again not only through technique and code. Through the symbols they used. Symbols that continue to influence digital culture today. The design of Punks itself isn’t particularly creative. PFPs existed before them. Pixel art is much older. Randomized traits had already been used in early video games. Nevertheless, the conceptuality makes them innovative. And when that innovation spreads, influences others, creates symbols, and becomes part of a culture, it starts following pretty much the same path through which great art has always been built. An Impressionist artist could make 50 paintings while an academic painter spent much longer making one. That was debated too. Nevertheless, no one today would argue that Impressionism doesn’t belong on the timeline of art history. So you can’t judge art only by its first layer of depiction. Conceptuality matters just as much as the shapes and colors you see
Hot take: CryptoPunks are not art. Not even great pixel art. As images, they're unremarkable. They're valuable because of history, scarcity and status. But stare at a symbol long enough, and it starts to look beautiful.

END OF AN ERA. A NEW CHAPTER AWAITS. As you’ve probably heard, I’ve said goodbye to CryptoPunk #8348 for $5.9M. This wasn’t an easy decision. I spent months flip-flopping on whether to sell, but after more than six years, I felt it was time. This Punk became my identity, so there was a lot more to think about than just the price. I wanted to write this earlier, but the transaction literally happened in a beer tent at Oktoberfest... So I needed some time to collect my thoughts. The 2021 NFT mania was insane. It gave me the opportunity to explore digital identity in ways I never expected when I bought 8348 in 2020 for $18,000. I DJ’d across Europe, North America and the Middle East, worked with luxury brands including Louis Vuitton, Swarovski (with mmERCH) and Dolce & Gabbana, and helped curate art events in Miami, Ibiza and London. I also released original music, vinyl records, merchandise, and much more. Looking back, I accomplished a lot with this Punk. But the landscape has changed considerably since then, and my interests and priorities have evolved too. Over the last 12–18 months, I’ve been winding down parts of the Seedphrase business and refocusing on what’s next. That’s meant going back to my roots in trading, which was my focus before 2020, taking on new challenges in gaming with Wolf Game, and exploring new possibilities with AI. On the creative side, I want to see what I can do under my own name. DJing without a helmet, playing more of my own taste in music, and being more involved in the art scene as Danny. I’ve spent six years building an identity around 8348, and I’m ready to give myself a bit more freedom to explore outside of that. I’m proud of what we built with this Punk. Selling it doesn’t change that, or my interest in the space. There’s still plenty I want to do here. I won’t reveal the new owner’s identity. They’re welcome to come forward in their own time. One of the first things I asked was that they be a good custodian of such a legendary CryptoPunk, and they’ve assured me they will. 8348 has been a huge part of my life since 2020. It’s strange to move on from something so many people know me by, but I’m excited to put that same energy into what comes next. You’ll be seeing more of me. Just without the helmet (and with fewer traits).

Just swept a pile of Argonauts. In the next 48 hours, I'll trade 4 of them for 4 artworks. One Argo, one piece. If you make art, reply with your work. 👇

#NewProfilePic Gm Have been less active here of late and after today will be even less active going forward. I’ll keep collecting but with more focus / in a more ad hoc fashion / more privately. Another change of pfp to mark / reflect the arc change. All the best to everyone genuine out there

This Ape has and will ALWAYS be to me the prize of my entire collection and maybe the most loved thing I own bar none. It was my first big purchase years back and means S0 much to me. 🍊 has always been my fav color and the prison jump suit was a reminder of when I was locked up by the Feds years ago. Today I’m giving it as a gift to @0xquit for basically saving the space for all of us last night. I was lucky to not get drained but many of my friends did. His selflessness and generosity is what I inspire to be. When I get home from work will transfer my orange 🧡 to him. It’s definetly going to the absolute best of humans …. I know my ape will now be in the home where he belongs 🙏

The bulk of the damage is done, but there are still assets that are vulnerable to the exploit. I'm doing what I can to sweep what's left but hundreds of scammers are also doing the same. I'm proud to present my latest piece, "Blue Screen of Death", soon to be exhibited in Marfa for the '26 Art Blocks weekend. An immense pleasure to be invited in what I consider to be the most unique event of our space to showcase my art and spread the Romantic Cyberpunk doctrine.

Today, @Punk8868 acquired Participant 9. Another piece of DOOM Party has found its custodian. Created by XCOPY in 2020, DOOM Party remains, in my view, one of the most extraordinary works @XCOPYART has ever created and still one of the most profoundly undervalued. A work conceived not as a fixed image, but as a living system of interconnected artworks, where collectors themselves were given agency over the final composition. At its core are only 9 Participants. Nine autonomous works. Nine actors within the same system. Each capable of shifting between different states and altering the Masterwork they collectively inhabit. Participant 9 changing hands is more than the acquisition of a scarce XCOPY work. It’s the transfer of a role inside one of the most ambitious experiments in programmable digital art. Welcome to DOOM party 🙏🏻🙌🏻

Many artistic mediums won't survive the next 50 years. But what survives may get rarer and probably more valuable. Uncomfortable, but scarcity and quality end up looking identical on a price tag and I'll have to make peace with the fact that I'll never know which one bought mine.

Working on a few side quests and laying the foundations for a couple big commissions as the summer ends. Buying back some editions as the Network prepares to welcome two new members and evolve past its first steps. Will sit out a few events as I expand my portfolio. Stay tuned…
