Stop with your AI rubbish! Mourinho continues talking while taking a gulp of water
🚨 José Mourinho explains why Federico Valverde is starting at right-back ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold at Real Madrid:
🎙️ Interviewer: “José, Trent has been left out of the starting XI for two consecutive games, with Valverde playing at right-back. What is behind that decision?”
José Mourinho:
“People look at Trent and immediately think about what he can do with the ball. The passes, the crosses, the creativity. These are excellent qualities, but a football match is not played only when your team has possession. I have to consider what happens when we lose the ball, and that is where my decisions begin.”
“Trent can unlock a defence with one pass, but I also need to know that my right-back will be in the correct position when the opposition launches a counterattack. At this level, you cannot afford to give opponents easy opportunities because you are too focused on what you can do going forward. The smallest mistakes can decide the biggest matches.”
“Federico gives me a different kind of reliability. He understands the physical demands of the role, he covers enormous distances, he competes for every ball and he rarely stops working. When our winger moves forward, I know Valverde has the discipline and energy to protect the space behind him. That balance is extremely important to me.”
“I am not saying Trent has nothing to offer. Quite the opposite. His ability to create chances is special, and there will be matches where we need exactly that quality. But selecting a team is about identifying what a particular game demands, not simply putting the most gifted players on the pitch and hoping everything works.”
🎙️ Interviewer: “Some fans believe you are wasting Trent’s attacking ability by keeping him on the bench.”
José Mourinho:
“Then they are looking at only half of the game. I have enormous respect for attacking football, but I also respect the work that allows attacking players to express themselves. Someone must win the duels, close the spaces and prevent the opponent from exploiting our weaknesses. That work is just as valuable as the final pass.”
“Valverde may not offer the same passing quality as Trent, but he gives me intensity, defensive responsibility and the freedom to adjust my system without losing control. Right now, those qualities are what I want from that position.”
🎙️ Interviewer: “So, is Trent still part of your plans?”
José Mourinho:
“Absolutely. I do not judge a player by two games, and I am certainly not going to discard someone with his ability. But competition for places is not a ceremony where I reward reputations. Every player must convince me that he is the right choice for the team.”
“Trent has the quality to win matches with his right foot. Now he must show me that he can help us avoid losing them with the rest of his game. When I see that balance consistently, he will have every opportunity to return.”
“At Real Madrid, being special with the ball is a privilege. Being reliable without it is a responsibility.”
