The Rohingya suffer mightily in places like Bangladesh and Malaysia, but at home in Myanmar -- where reporting is so difficult -- the situation is simply unbearable.
The past few weeks have been truly devastating for #Rohingya. Governments are moving towards returns, deals and renewed engagement with the #MyanmarMilitary. Meanwhile, the news from #RakhineState is truly horrifying. Our sources tell us Rohingya are trapped between Myanmar military airstrikes and their communities terrorised by the #ArakanArmy. Young Rohingya are forcibly recruited to become human shields. People are being arrested and extorted. Families are fleeing. Homes, land and villages are taken by the Arakan Army. On 28 September, 34 Rohingya from one village in #Rathedaung were arrested at once by Arakan Army. The next day, one man was returned to his family dead. The other 33 are still missing. Their families have been given no answers. Politics is going backwards while Rohingya face total erasure. This is an emergency.

Rohingya exclusion birthed one crisis; the coup spread it nationwide. Only a shared political future for all can end both. Deporting refugees and shaking hands with the general behind both crises solves neither. english.dvb.no/get-the-rohin…

It was an honour to address the @UN Human Rights Council at #HRC63 today. I was able to share what our #Rohingya brothers and sisters are enduring in Rakhine State, in the refugee camps in Bangladesh and around the world. Our message to Member States was clear: Rohingya are being erased from our homeland. We face two oppressors, the military and the Arakan Army, both denying our identity, our rights and our future. For decades, the UN has documented our persecution. There is no lack of evidence or international law. What has been missing is action. UN High Commissioner @volker_turk’s message was clear too: years of international efforts have failed. States need a ‘reality check’ in their approach, and engagement with the military cannot continue without meaningful pressure for change. Rohingya must not be forced back while conditions remain unsafe. Rohingya must lead decisions about our return, with protection, equal rights, restoration of our land and citizenship. International law must be enforced.
