"AA troops came into downtown, forced the people to leave their homes and started torching houses," Nay San Lwin, co-founder of the Free Rohingya Coalition advocacy group told Reuters, based on what he said were eyewitness accounts. "While the town was burning, I spoke with several people I have known and trusted for years. They all testified that the arson attack was done by the AA." reuters.com/world/asia-pacif…

In areas of Arakan or Rakhine State controlled by the Arakan Army (AA), Rohingya civilians still face the same travel restrictions previously imposed by the Myanmar military. Even for a short trip to a neighbouring village, Rohingya travellers must secure a travel permit backed by two guarantors. If the traveller fails to return on time, those guarantors face punishment.

Following the pattern seen in Buthidaung on May 17, 2024, the Arakan Army (AA) has ordered the Rohingya villagers of Ah Nauk Pyin (အနောက်ပြင်) village in Rathedaung Township to leave by October 17, 2026. Where are these people supposed to go? Are they being pushed toward the sea or into Bangladesh? Since the AA took control of northern Arakan, official figures indicate that nearly 150,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh, while many others have risked their lives at sea. In the past few days, the AA has also abducted more than 40 Rohingya from Ah Nauk Pyin village.

“Today Navi Pillay is a judge on the International Court of Justice in the case where Myanmar stands accused of genocide.”
2026 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Navi Pillay’s commitment to universal legal principles and her firm moral compass are constants in a long career. Born into a family of Indian Tamil origin under apartheid in Durban, South Africa, Pillay became a lawyer and legal pioneer, confronting deep structural discrimination, segregation and exclusion. A common thread runs from her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against apartheid to her service as a judge in some of the key international court cases of our time. This year’s laureate has significantly enlarged the scope and impact of international law. She has served as a judge on the High Court in South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She was the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and, until recently, she chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Today Navi Pillay is a judge on the International Court of Justice in the case where Myanmar stands accused of genocide. In historic international court cases, she has shown that legal measures can help prevent acts of war and violence. Navi Pillay has also contributed to strengthen the institutions of international law. Her independence, expertise and steadfastness have made her one of the most respected international jurists of our time. The Genocide General belongs on trial, not on a red carpet. Min Aung Hlaing is wanted under an arrest warrant for genocide and crimes against humanity. Malaysia can still change course: @anwaribrahim should arrest #MinAungHlaing, not host him. brouk.org.uk/malaysia-implem…

“The genocide has never stopped. Sending Rohingya back to this is not repatriation,” Nay San Lwin, cochair of the Arakan Rohingya National Council (ARNC), a group representing the Rohingya, told Al Jazeera. “It is sending people back to a killing field. We call on Malaysia to halt all returns of Rohingya to Myanmar until it is safe.” He argued that Malaysia’s decision to send refugees back to Myanmar came at a time when intense fighting was taking place between the army and rebel groups, including the Arakan Army. “The Myanmar military has lost control of much of the Rohingya homeland, and its fighting with the Arakan Army is still ongoing, with Rohingya caught in the middle. Both the military and the Arakan Army are committing atrocities against the Rohingya,” he said. aje.news/rded9f

“The nine-year commemoration must spark immediate action, not just statements. All supporters and allies must unite to pressure the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army to end violence against the Rohingya and establish safe conditions for survivors to return home,” — my comment in @AJEnglish aljazeera.com/news/2026/8/25…

Dr. Maung Zarni | Burmese Author & Human Rights Activist | Free Rohingya Coalition (@FreeRoCoalition): Even Myanmar's strongest supporter, China - and to a degree India - grew worried about the junta collapsing. Neither wanted a Balkans or Syria scenario on their doorstep. Both share over 1,000 miles of border with Myanmar. China stepped in. Russia had always backed the military - 25 years of technological & military cooperation. India followed its own strategic calculus. The result: a weakened military regime backed unconditionally by three major global powers - China, India & Russia. The regime is willing to kill its way back to survival. While for the democratic opposition, the situation is looking increasingly dire.
