Amnesty International Zimbabwe is relieved that human rights defender Narshon Kohlo has been released following his arbitrary arrest on 5 October 2026.
But to be clear, Kohlo should not have been arrested and detained in the first place. No one should be arrested, detained and subjected to intimidation for peaceful assembly or expressing their views.
Authorities must also ensure that criminal law is not misused as a tool to silence dissent or target those exercising their fundamental rights. – at Zimbabwe

🌱 From climate justice awareness to action!
At Chirinda Secondary School, young people are turning climate knowledge into practical action.
Through support to the school’s prize-giving event, Amnesty International Zimbabwe strengthened the Climate Justice Community of Practice, creating space for learners to showcase their creativity, ideas and commitment to climate action.
One of the highlights was the school’s climate change theatre performance, which brought climate issues to life through the voices and creativity of learners. The performance demonstrated how creative expression can help young people understand climate change, their roles and responsibilities in building a more sustainable future.
But the biggest story is what happened beyond awareness.
🌿 The school’s Climate Justice Club has moved from talking about climate change to taking practical action — including establishing a biogas project that now provides energy for the school kitchen.
Today, we celebrate the young people at Chirinda Secondary School for turning knowledge into action, creativity into advocacy, and ideas into sustainable solutions.

#BREAKING news 🗞️🚨🚨🚨
Our brother and Comrade @Che_Guevara_ZW has been arrested by the ZRP in Harare for organizing a national prayer in solidarity with vendors.
This is an attack on freedom of assembly, freedom of worship and freedom of expression. Praying for the poor and oppressed is not a crime!
Comrade Narshon is a voice for the voiceless vendors who are harassed daily just for trying to earn a living. Criminalizing solidarity is the lowest a regime can go.
We stand in full solidarity with Narshon and we strongly condemn this cowardly act by the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
We urge the ZRP to immediately and unconditionally FREE HIM!

Once again, the regime is weaponising state power by targeting young people who challenge its rotten ways and abuse of power. We stand in unwavering solidarity with Narshon Kohlo, our @cdf_command Youth Chair, who has reportedly been arrested and detained at Budiriro 2 Police Station while the specific charges against him remain unknown.

The arrest of @cdfzim National Youth Leader @Che_Guevara_ZW is yet another reminder of how quickly coercion is deployed against voices that refuse to conform. The arrest and detention of Narshon must be condemned, and I join the call for his immediate release. Political disagreement must never be answered through intimidation or arbitrary deprivation of liberty.
Narshon belongs to a generation determined to defend constitutionalism, justice and accountable government. Repression may detain individuals, but it cannot detain an idea whose time has come.

Climate Justice Voices from Wendumba, Manicaland 🌍✊🏾🌱💚
Climate justice begins with communities. In Marange’s Wendumba community, Manicaland Province, local voices are helping to shape conversations about climate change, human rights and the future of their environment.
Last week, Amnesty International Zimbabwe, in partnership with Eastern Arts , a community-based theatre organisation, brought together community leaders and climate justice champions for a community dialogue on climate justice.
The dialogue created space for community members to share their experiences, concerns and ideas about the changing climate and its impact on their lives and livelihoods. Through participatory learning and open discussion, participants explored the links between climate change, human rights and environmental sustainability, while reflecting on what communities can do to respond to the climate crisis.
The conversations also highlighted the power of local action. From raising awareness and protecting the environment to engaging families, neighbours and community structures, participants explored practical ways of building climate-conscious and resilient communities.
Climate justice is not only about global commitments and policies. It is about people, their rights, their livelihoods and their communities. When communities have the knowledge, platforms and tools to participate meaningfully in climate action, they can help shape solutions that respond to their realities and protect those most affected by the climate crisis.
There can be no climate justice without human rights. Communities must be at the centre of climate decision-making, ensuring that climate action is fair, inclusive and responsive to the people who are experiencing its impacts.

🚨 URGENT ALERT | ARREST & DETENTION OF NARSHON T. KOHLO
Protect Defenders is concerned by reports that Narshon T. Kohlo has been arrested and is currently detained at Budiriro 2 Police Station, with reports indicating that he is expected to be transferred to …
Harare Central Law and Order Section.
The reported circumstances of his arrest raise serious constitutional concerns, particularly if his arrest is connected to statements or messages expressing criticism of those in authority.
Protect Defenders therefore calls for the authorities to immediately disclose the legal basis of the arrest & we further call for an investigation into any allegation that law-enforcement powers are being used to retaliate against or silence protected expression.
