So I'd heard of silent corridors but in an @OCR_English forum learnt that there's even "silent classrooms" and "silent schools"... Students not allowed to talk to each other about a text in an English lesson, for example🤔 The @oracycommission's work is very timely! @voice21oracy

Another issue with the unusually heavy focus on phonics in England is that the early stories children are made to read are designed to contain only a small number of sounds. As a result, they can sound artificial and may not be engaging. 5/6

Comparing international test results with Canada and Ireland, we suggest that children would benefit from a broader approach. Phonics should be part of it but we should use more stories they enjoy and encourage them to engage with texts and images in different ways as well. 6/6

We point to additional concerning research by the Trust. This shows that children’s joy of reading is at its lowest since 2005. We link this disappointing fact to the excessive focus on synthetic phonics in early #education in England. 3/6 nlt.cdn.ngo/media/documents/…

Synthetic phonics, often referred to simply as “phonics”, works by teaching correspondences between letters and sounds. The approach works best when those correspondences are very regular. That is the case in Spanish, for example. Unfortunately, in English it isn’t. 4/6
