Personal view: prompted by the recent JCHR report, a human in the loop is not enough. Three tests: controllability, authority and contestability — and what makes human oversight meaningful. What remains non-delegable? proftomcrick.com/2026/10/11/…

#OTD in #ComputingHistory in 1954, the first successful FORTRAN program was executed. Developed at IBM by a team led by ACM A.M. Turing Award laureate John Backus, FORTRAN was designed to make programming scientific and engineering problems easier by allowing programmers to use mathematical formulas instead of writing everything in machine or assembly language. FORTRAN went on to become a foundational language for scientific and engineering computing, and it is still used today, including in high-performance computing. More #OTD here: buff.ly/yg2MIlN

Happy Birthday, ACM! Today, our organization turns 79 years old. #OTD in #ComputingHistory in 1947, a group of computing pioneers came together to establish the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Led by Edmund C. Berkeley, the group set out to support a new world shaped by computers. ACM was created to foster the development of computing and support the professionals and academics advancing this emerging field. Today, it has grown into a global community helping shape the future of computing. What would our founders think of today’s advances? Discover more #OTD in #ComputingHistory: buff.ly/yg2MIlN

New post: WarGames (1983) as a way into questions about AI, automation, human oversight and the limits of delegation. The issue is not only what systems can do, but what authority we give them: proftomcrick.com/2026/08/26/…

"I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu)..." On August 25, 1991, a 21-year-old student sent a message to a Usenet newsgroup. He thought he was just building something fun for himself. 35 years later, that "hobby" is the backbone of global technology: 🚀 Powering helicopters in space with NASA ☁️ Running the global cloud and 100% of the world’s supercomputers 📱 Connecting billions of people 🎮 Redefining the future of handheld gaming What started as one student's side project became the greatest collaborative technology movement in history. Thank you to every maintainer, contributor, and advocate who made it possible. Happy 35th Birthday, Linux. Here’s to the power of open source and the next 35 years of building together. learnlinux.ie/content/linus-… #Linux35
