The @UofMaryland Athletics Department has agreed to First Amendment training with FIRE after two student journalists were reported to campus police for “suspicious activity” while trying to interview @umterps football players. Student reporters should be able to do their jobs in public spaces without fear of unnecessary police encounters. We appreciate Maryland Athletics’ willingness to address these concerns. Public universities — including their athletic departments — have a duty to protect press freedom, not intimidate those exercising it.
For @testudotimes, @JudeWilkenfeld and I were outside Jones-Hill House trying to get players to comment. An athletics staffer took pictures of us, and a police dispatch was called for suspicious activity; a cop and 2 cop cars pulled up, and officers ID’d us and asked us to leave.

The next great hire in our business is the smart place that pounces on the best free agent on the market.
Today is my last at The Washington Post. My job was eliminated in February along with the rest of the sports department, but my layoff was extended through September. The Post had one of the greatest collections of sports journalists ever. Working with each of them was an honor.

Thinking of my friend Aaron Brown today. 9/11 was his first day of work at CNN, and he became an indelible part of our memories of that day. He was a wonderful journalist and a terrific guy who broke no-smoking rules with impunity.

It is shameful that @nytimes @TheAthletic buried the fact that the biggest punishment in NBA history was the result of an investigation by journalist @PabloTorre. And to call it the result of a "podcast episode" is a further slap in the face. He won a Pulitzer for this story and they call it an "episode" instead of, at the outset -- crediting him with exposing this scandal. Really really lame.

I’m in awe of my friend Pablo Torre and the team at @pablofindsout. We need a new name for whatever they just did because it ain’t podcasting, and I’m not even calling it audio reporting. They’re out here causing evolution. Making a medium jump geological periods. I, for one, welcome our Archaeopteryxian overlords! @PabloTorre
We are honored to have been named the winner of the 2026 Pulitzer Prize in Audio Reporting!

Happy “Headless Body In Topless Bar” Day, if you're observing it... 43 years ago today, April 15, 1983, the legendary NY Post managing editor, the late Vincent A. Musetto wrote the greatest headline of all time…

As terrific a journalist as @Lescarpenter is, he is even nicer and more generous with his time - traits some of my former students have been fortunate to witness. Someone please hire him.
My friend @Lescarpenter was up early and reported to our WaPo office in Milan this morning, one day after our storied Sports department was dismantled. We talked the whole commute about Olympic stories he's still excited to do. And I can't wait to read them.

Jeff Bezos bought The Washington Post for $250 million in 2013. In the newsroom, Bob Woodward asked Bezos a simple question: Why? “I finally concluded that I could provide runway—financial runway—because I don’t think you can keep shrinking the business,” Bezos said. “You can be profitable and shrinking. And that’s a survival strategy, but it ultimately leads to irrelevance, at best. And, at worst, it leads to extinction.”
