I'm pleased to announce that my new book, "The Pardon: The Politics of Presidential Mercy," is now available for pre-order, in advance of publication in Feb 2025. Kind of timely, I'm thinking.

Pleased to share my piece about Bennie Thompson, the Mississippi Rep whose career tracks the history of the Voting Rights Act. First won local office just after the law passed, and he is on the verge of losing his seat because the Supreme Court has decimated the law.

Trump calls for the arrest of New York Times reporters, and it doesn't even make news? That's where we are? Really?

I've been getting some lovely newsletter reader emails today about Aaron Brown, CNN's voice on 9/11, who died in 2024. Here's one of them:
"I was one of the many who relied upon CNN on that tragic and terrible day and afterward. Aaron Brown was an eloquent anchor, as well as an excellent reporter. On 9/11, he kept us up to date with what was known at the time, and later, as more facts unfolded, he put them into context. But he always focused on the facts: he never guessed or speculated or spread conspiracy theories. He was a voice of reason, and that was what we all needed. I miss him to this day. May he rest in peace, and may his family know that Aaron's contributions to journalism have not been forgotten."
Thinking of my friend Aaron Brown today. 9/11 was his first day of work at CNN, and he became an indelible part of our memories of that day. He was a wonderful journalist and a terrific guy who broke no-smoking rules with impunity.
Dolly used her fortune to send millions and millions of books to kids. What a glorious human being . . .
That was such a great piece, John
The academic turned speculator Victor Niederhoffer has died at the age of 82. He was a fascinating character. Here is a profile of him that I published in 2007.
