This is a saddening turn in the remarkable story around this manuscript.
This paper achieved unseen popular attention and its content was positioned as a new hope for patients with #PancreaticCancer - the lack of transparency is concerning.
PNAS retracted Mariano Barbacid’s Dec 2025 paper on a triple therapy (daraxonrasib + afatinib + SD-36) that achieved complete pancreatic tumor regression in 45 mice.
The sole reason: undisclosed financial stakes by Barbacid and two co-authors in Vega Oncotargets startup. Scientific findings were not challenged. The authors will resubmit with proper disclosure.

I was thrilled to hear that a recent scan showed my brain tumour area is still looking pretty good. It’s simply amazing to still be here enjoying life! I’m incredibly grateful to the outstanding medical team who care for me so well. Thank you Helen Wheeler, Michael Back, Marina Kastelan and colleagues for your dedicated teamwork. Best wishes to everyone including during our Aussie summer months!

2/ When people offhandedly say that doctors are withholding the cure to cancer, it literally causes me physical pain. What I want more than anything is for science to speed up. To develop cures. To make cancer a thing of the past so the patients I cherish can live full lives.
