Yuva Sangam Phase VII: Celebrating Unity in Diversity
Under Yuva Sangam Phase VII, the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Mohali serves as the nodal institution for the Chandigarh–Punjab region, paired with the Central University of Gujarat to foster cultural exchange, mutual understanding, and national integration among young people.
The orientation program, organized at IISER Mohali on 8 October 2026 familiarised delegates with the objectives of Yuva Sangam, cultural sensitivity, responsible conduct, safety guidelines, and the importance of respecting diverse traditions and values. The initiative is built around five key pillars: Paryatan (Tourism), Parampara (Traditions), Pragati (Development), Paraspar Sampark (People-to-People Connect), and Prodyogiki (Technology).
Through educational visits, cultural interactions, and shared experiences, the delegates will explore Gujarat’s rich cultural heritage, technological advancements, and vibrant communities, gaining deeper insights into the state’s unique identity and its contributions to India’s diverse cultural landscape.
The Chandigarh delegation was flagged off from IISER Mohali on 9 October 2026 by Prof. Dulal Panda, Director of NIPER Mohali, marking the beginning of an enriching journey of discovery, friendship, and cultural exchange.
Yuva Sangam embodies the spirit of Unity in Diversity, bringing young people from different regions together to appreciate one another’s cultures, strengthen mutual understanding, and celebrate India’s shared identity while embracing its rich diversity of traditions and values.

The road to India's next science Nobel runs through its universities
Somak Raychaudhury (@somakrc), Professor of Physics, Ashoka University, writes about this year's Nobel Prize in Physics, awarded to Francis Halzen for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and advocates that Indian universities need patient funding, institutional memory and the freedom to fail if the next one is to be earned at home.
'Joint doctorates, funded exchanges and paid industry placements should be routine. The aim is brain circulation, not drain,' he writes.

It was an amazing experience to visit Royal Tyrrel Museum Paleontology located in Drumheller, Calgary, Canada to see incredibly magnificent fossils of a variety of dinosaurs and an educational depiction of evolution of life. Worth visiting to a glimpse of the archaic atmosphere.

ANNOUNCING THE 2026 WOLF PRIZE LAUREATE IN MEDICINE
The 2026 Wolf Prize in Medicine is awarded to Charles S. Zuker of Columbia University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, “for revolutionizing our understanding of taste, the last of our senses to be elucidated.”
Sweet. Sour. Bitter. Salty. Umami:
Zuker’s research revealed the cells and receptors responsible for each of the five basic tastes - and showed how those signals are encoded and represented in the brain.
His experiments went even further: by rewiring taste receptors in mice, his team demonstrated that what makes something feel “sweet” or “bitter” is not simply the receptor itself, but the specific neural pathway activated between the tongue and the brain.
By defining how chemical signals on the tongue are translated into perception and behavior, Zuker transformed taste from one of the least understood sensory systems into one of the best mapped in modern neuroscience.
Congratulations to Charles S. Zuker, 2026 Wolf Prize Laureate in Medicine. – at West University Place, TX

I just published: How do we recognize world-class science? Not by the journal it appeared in
What I told early-career researchers about prediction, rigour, failure, priors — and the tyranny of bar graphs.
Science predicts. Pseudoscience doesn’t.
Twenty-nine years
How to science, and how not to
What’s a failed experiment?
Death by statistics
Ditch the bar graphs
Get credit for all of it
