What does the data tell us about the number of jobs reclaimed by South Africans since the beginning of Mabahambe? How many black South Africans have taken over or opened spaza shops? How many South Africans have been employed by restaurants following the marches? Beyond anecdotes about empty clinics and hospitals, what do the figures show? Have patient-to-healthcare-worker ratios improved? Are waiting times shorter?
eNCA has led the coverage of the marches with extraordinary enthusiasm, with the SABC close behind. After devoting so much attention to the demonstrations and their leaders, both broadcasters should now be asking these important questions: What has changed? How many jobs have been reclaimed? How many businesses have changed hands? Have public services improved? With so much destruction of property and anxiety, surely this feedback is in the public interest. Or are the broadcasters just drawn to the drama of the demonstrations.
I am here for these kinds of data analysis!
1/3 Who won the registration battle in JHB?
Ok, so I am making my through the voters roll changes per VD in JHB over the two registration weekends. I have mapped them. Just to be clear though, changes in voters roll is one measure of registration success, but not the definitive measure. It is however the point of it all, and a good proxy for voter enthusiasm.
I have done one map for weekend 1, one for weekend 2 and one for both weekends combined.
Accompanying each map is a data table. These will be where the real insight lies.
I have worked out how the voters roll changed in VDs where the ANC is first, those where the DA is first and those where any other party is first.
This is also a good general proxy for enthusiasm or registration effectiveness for the two big parties.
But let me illustrate, here is the map for weekend 1.
The average growth of the voters roll across all VDs was 20.34. In other words the voters roll grew by an average of 20.34 voters per VD.
The average in ANC first VDs was 7.32.
The average in DA first VDs was 23.72
The average in other first VDs was 18.94
So, we can be pretty sure the DA out-registered the ANC by a ratio of around 3:1.
Others did well, not quite as well as the DA, but better than the ANC.

South Africans are in denial. At Madlanga Commission its all South Africans committing all sorts of crime. I don't dispute the fact that some immigrants are criminals too, but ya'll scapegoating them. It's a mess.
I got a message from a former close friend of the dead shooter in the Umbilo “hijacking” last week.
The individual says the suspect is from Harding, KZN, but also had a home in Inanda.
His nickname was Smile.
According to the friend, he was out on parole since 9 January this year.
It’s believed he was a hitman who worked closely with drug dealers.
Police records now also confirm the dead gunman is a South African.

The unfortunate part about these local government elections being unnecessarily dominated by the topic of immigration is that we missing out on speaking about many real life issues affecting municipalities.
We not even hearing innovative ideas to reform local government.

Famously no debate about who was allowed to use which restroom in 1965. Or water fountain. Or lunch counter.
I don’t think people fully understand what’s happening. We’re not being priced out of luxury. We’re being priced out of normal. A house, car, Groceries, Childcare, Insurance,These weren’t extravagant expectations 20 years ago.

This highlights a major double standard in how crime is reported and discussed. When foreign nationals are involved in crime, the media and public figures often explicitly highlight their nationality to fuel xenophobia. However, when South Africans are caught running massive drug labs (like this one in Soweto or the one in Krugersdorp), their nationality is simply omitted, and they are just referred to as "suspects."
Crime has no nationality. The drug crisis is not a foreigner problem, it is a local criminal enterprise.
FOUR SUSPECTS ARRESTED FOLLOWING DISCOVERY OF SUSPECTED DRUG LABORATORY IN MEADOWLANDS, SOWETO
Gauteng Organised Crime Investigations’ Tracing and Narcotics teams, working closely Police Emergency Services Flexi and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), Serious Organised Crime Investigations, have arrested four suspects following the discovery of a suspected drug laboratory at a house in Soweto.
The team received information regarding suspected illicit drug-related activities at the premises and conducted surveillance on the evening of 15 October 2026.
Further information received indicated that the suspects might be in the process of moving suspected drugs.
The team subsequently proceeded to the premises, where four suspects were arrested.
The premises is a family residence, and police discovered the drug-manufacturing operation in a room situated at the back of the house.
All the necessary resources were mobilised including the Criminal Record and Crime Scene Management who are processing the scene. The equipment and chemicals found at the premises will be seized for further investigation and analysis.
A substantial quantity of pills suspected to have been manufactured somewhere else was also found.
The case has been handed over to the DPCI Hawks for further investigation.
The four suspects aged between 21 and 25 are expected to appear before court soon to face drug related charges.

There are 167 000 asylum seekers and refugees in South Africa right now.
