Many of my followers are urologists, and I'm talking with some of them this week, so I thought they might appreciate one of my early 🧵on the novel ways that Foley catheters have been used *other than* for draining the bladder. 🧐

Beware the student of one teacher. A good idea spirals into dogma when it gets applied to everything and stretched beyond the areas where it is useful. Remain open and embrace a lot of teachers.

It is with profound sadness that I learned of the passing of Dr. Reed Pyeritz, a towering figure in inherited aortic disease and medical genetics, whose vision and scholarship fundamentally transformed the care of patients with Marfan syndrome and other heritable thoracic aortic diseases. Dr. Pyeritz made seminal contributions to the understanding and care of patients with Marfan syndrome and other heritable thoracic aortic diseases, helping to define and advance the field. He was an outstanding physician, educator, mentor, and advocate whose career was devoted to improving the lives of patients and families affected by these conditions. We were privileged to have him as a colleague and foundational member of our multidisciplinary aortic community at Penn. His clinical insight and commitment to patient-centered care helped shape the collaborative model of aortic disease management that continues to guide our work. On behalf of the Penn Aorta Center, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and the many patients whose lives he touched. His legacy endures through his scientific contributions, the physicians he trained, and the patients he served with extraordinary dedication. He will be deeply missed. Nimesh D. Desai, MD, PhD Director, Penn Aorta Center

It is with great sadness that we share the news that retired Army Colonel (Dr.) Norman M. Rich, Professor Emeritus and one of the founding figures of the SAVS passed away on June 18, 2026, at the age of 92. His lifetime achievements were too numerous to count. He established the Vietnam Vascular Registry, which became the model for modern military outcomes databases and trauma registries, helping physicians study injury patterns, refine treatments, and save lives on battlefields around the world. He also founded the Walter Reed Vascular Fellowship Program and was president of several major vascular societies. Among his many honors were the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit, the Presidential Medallion presented by President Ronald Reagan, the Society for Vascular Surgery Lifetime Achievement Award, the Michael E. DeBakey Award, the René Leriche Award, the Founders Award of the American Venous Four, and ultimately was designated as an “Icon of Surgery”. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life of extraordinary purpose and impact. Dr. Rich leaves behind a legacy measured not only in surgical innovations, academic achievements, and professional honors, but also in the countless lives saved by those he taught, the institution he helped build, and the generations of military medical professionals who continue to follow the example he set.

18 years ago we burnt a hole in an endograft for a single renal artery to repair (turned down for open repair) her juxtarenal aneurysm. Fast forward-we are discharging patients POD 1 after 3 vessel arch with percutaneous femoral puncture & radial puncture. Absolute magic.

When was your last aorto-iliac endarterectomy? My very first was a couple of weeks ago. Always wanted to do one 🙂 Sending a patient home with a happy aorta, graft free is a cool feeling 😎 @PShivanesandr @sctimst_tvm @AortaEd

“Try a hard problem. You may not solve it, but you will prove something else.” Love this succinct quote from J. E. Littlewood. Also, often you prove “something else” not about the problem but about yourself.
