How is it that people on the Western political left manage to completely ignore the existence of Jihadism & Islamic Extremism?
I’m not getting at ordinary Muslims or people here. I don’t get at ordinary Jews either. God, if only we could all live in peace.
How on earth though, are people finding it so easy to ‘pick a side’ and ignore the consequences of their obsessions for other people at home and ignore the many harms on ordinary citizens across Africa & the ME which has nothing to do with Israel? How are you managing to turn that blind eye?

I'm incredibly proud of how much we Swedes have contributed to the world, despite being so few.
Greta Thunberg is not one of those contributions. Sorry about that.

You live in a society where education is free, where people receive benefits if they’re out of work, and where there are job vacancies that employers struggle to fill. Life expectancy and health outcomes are better than they were for most of human history.
Sure, there are some people who are obscenely rich. I’m not one of them, by the way. And I know there are people who are struggling to make ends meet. But if you think the poor are worse off now than they were 50 or 100 years ago, never mind 500 years ago, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.
And if you think the solution to poverty is trashing shops, smashing things up and destroying property, then you’ve lost your reason, my friend.
Characterising the riots in France as some sort of rebellion of the desperate and needy, with the peasants at the gates of Marie Antoinette’s palace, is patently absurd.
It’s criminality. Young thugs stealing the latest piece of technology or pair of trainers they can get their hands on before returning to their neighbourhoods, where some will resume lives of criminality, selling drugs and engaging in other nefarious activities.
Being poor doesn’t make you a bad person. It doesn’t make you assault people, steal from them or destroy their property.
And it’s a form of appalling bigotry to suggest that people who are struggling to make ends meet are somehow predisposed to behaving like animals.

Apparently there's "panic in the streets of London" at the march of nationalism in the peripheral parliaments of the UK. At least according to John Swinney.
"Andy Burnham will be the last prime minister of the United Kingdom" he says.
But enthusiasm for an early referendum is not exactly setting the heather on fire in Scotland right now.
So why does the First Minister think the "stars are aligning" for Scottish independence?

Ar&ehole here is adding words which aren’t there.
Stupidity isn’t unique to the Scots, never said this, it’s absolutely a common affliction.
However, in a situation where brains are required it’s best to have them.
So the Independence movement needs to be better than this 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻
Exactly, a “dangerous & inflammatory” motion.
Shami Chakrabarti condemns the Green Party’s Zionism is racism motion on #PoliticsLive
“It’s not even fair to student unions to call this student union politics”. She describes the motion as “wrong and highly inflammatory”

Staggering, uninformed complacency here. Almost Trumpian in its combination of ignorance, baseless assertion, data-trashing, obdurate unwillingness actually to debate the claims, & the brash declaration that we’re actually the best—if only a benighted world could recognise it 🤷🏻♂️
Note, Mr Finlay shouldn’t be accusing her of being anti-Semitic IMO.
I’ve no doubt she’s not a deliberately unkind nor bigoted person.
She & people like her though can’t go around shlt stirring, creating conflict and then sit on the fence, all doe eyed & innocent. Her views create anti-semitism by consequence though I think.
Kind of good news I think…
Reform UK has lost its first MSP and dropped into third place at Holyrood.
Amanda Bland is now an independent and no longer a Reform MSP.

I have some views that would be considered right wing, this is one of them.
You can be empathic to peoples frustration & anger, but you can’t appease bad behaviour like this.
You can’t let people away with violence, riots & harming others.
And yes, feel free to pay more taxes anyone.
Ah yes. Let’s appease civil unrest. I’m sure they would stop just there. No chance they would come back for more. Reward to rioters at the expense of law abiding tax paying citizens.
You’re mental. Stick to ladybirds.
P.s. you’re able to give back a portion of your big tax payer funded salary anytime?
I’m very surprised that anyone at all is trying to make excuses for the vandals, thugs, and thieves we witnessed in France.
As far as I’m concerned there’s no excuse and no we can’t go about feeling sorry for them or making excuses for it. They clearly don’t care enough about the people around them. It can’t be excused and most certainly not rewarded.

Qué peligro has evitado reventando un local?

It’s often the opposite.
(The ruling classes frequently exploit students’s black & white thinking and ideological optimism to usher in totalitarian regimes).
Signed a historian.
A good rule of history: if you find yourself opposing a student movement while siding with the ruling class, you're wrong. Every time, in every era, whatever the issue.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Student movements have not always been on the right side of history. Mao's student Red Guards persecuted hundreds of thousands. Students helped Castro and Khomeini rise to power, and Nazi student groups opposed the Weimar Republic.

I’m French. 🇫🇷
And I’m tired of watching people confuse freedom with the freedom to destroy.
You have the right to protest.
You have the right to be angry.
You have the right to demand change.
You do NOT have the right to burn, loot or attack people.
A Republic that protects the right to protest must also protect its citizens from violence.
That’s not authoritarianism.
That’s the rule of law.
