🌊 This Sunday marks World Rivers Day, a global celebration of the waterways that connect communities, move commerce, and sustain ecosystems around the world.
Here at Ports of Indiana, we don't have to look far to see that connection in action. Two of our three ports — Mount Vernon and Jeffersonville — sit right on the banks of the Ohio River, one of the most vital inland waterways in the country. Every day, barges move grain, steel, fertilizer, and countless other goods along this river, linking Hoosier businesses to markets across the globe while keeping thousands of trucks off the road.
Rivers like the Ohio aren't just infrastructure; they're lifelines. They shape how we grow, trade, and connect as a state, and they deserve our attention and care well beyond one day a year.
This World Rivers Day, we're proud to celebrate the Ohio River and the role it plays in Indiana's economy.

🌊 Today is World Maritime Day!
Each year, the @IMOHQ (IMO) sets aside this day to spotlight the industry that keeps global trade moving — safely, securely, and sustainably.
We live this every day at Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor. As Indiana’s deep-water port on Lake Michigan, Burns Harbor connects Hoosier businesses to the St. Lawrence Seaway and global markets — moving steel, grain, wind energy components, and more.
It's easy to overlook how much of daily life depends on ships and ports. Over 80% of the world's trade travels by sea, and every ton that crosses our docks at Burns Harbor is part of that story.

Some cargo doesn't fit in a box — literally.
Wind turbine blades the length of a football field. Storage tanks too wide for a standard trailer. Coils too heavy for everyday freight. This is project cargo: the oversized, high-value equipment that powers projects across the Midwest — and it takes a different kind of port to handle it.
At Burns Harbor, we offer:

️🗓️Starting today, our team will be on the ground in Houston at the George R. Brown Convention Center for @Break_Bulk Breakbulk Americas; the largest trade event in the Americas for project cargo and heavy-lift logistics.
With two port facilities on the Ohio River and another on Lake Michigan, Ports of Indiana is well-positioned to move oversized and project cargo efficiently through the heart of the country.
We're looking forward to connecting with shippers, EPCs (engineering, procurement, and construction firms), carriers, and logistics partners to talk about how Indiana's port system supports complex, high-value projects from barge to rail to road.
📍Stop by Stand D36 to talk cargo solutions - we'd love to connect.

🚂 This week is See Tracks? Think Train® Week (Sept. 21–27), marking 10 years of this national rail safety observance from @olinational, and it hits close to home for us at Ports of Indiana.
Rail safety isn't just a slogan for us; it's part of daily operations.
Our ports in Burns Harbor, Jeffersonville, and Mount Vernon rely on rail as a core part of how we move cargo. Rail connectivity is one of the things that makes our multimodal ports work: freight moves seamlessly between vessel, truck, and train, and that means our teams, tenants, and neighboring communities regularly share space with active tracks.
The message is simple: see tracks, think train. Always expect a train, obey signals and gates, and never assume a track is inactive… even in an industrial setting like ours where rail traffic is part of the everyday landscape.
This week, we're proud to stand with Operation Lifesaver and rail partners across the country in reinforcing that message for our employees, our tenants, and everyone who lives and works near our ports.

Ports of Indiana was proud to serve as a bronze sponsor at the 2026 Midwest U.S.-Japan Association (MWJA) Conference in Indianapolis this past week!
The event brought together business and government leaders from across the Midwest and Japan to discuss trade, investment, and innovation. And it was a great opportunity for our team to connect with current and potential Foreign-Trade Zone (FTZ) customers.
Foreign Trade and Economic Development Director Dexter Salenda and Foreign-Trade Zone Director Kent Ebbing represented POI at the conference, where they heard insightful remarks from @GovBraun and other keynote speakers on strengthening manufacturing, workforce development, and U.S.-Japan partnerships.
Thank you to the Japan-America Society of Indiana and the @Indiana_EDC for hosting a fantastic event that highlights Indiana's role as a global logistics and trade hub.

Federal policy decisions ripple straight down to Indiana's ports and the businesses we serve. That's why Josh Webb, our Director of Government Affairs, was in Washington, D.C. earlier this week for the @IndianaChamber D.C. INsider forum.
The two-day event connected Hoosier business leaders directly with Indiana's congressional delegation and federal officials, covering the legislation, tariffs and rulemaking shaping our state's economy. Josh was there sharing Ports of Indiana's perspective and staying ahead of the federal issues that matter most to our ports and the industries we support.
Thanks to the Indiana Chamber for organizing another valuable convening.

Twenty-five years ago today, September 11, 2001 changed our country forever. For many of us, it is a day we remember in exact detail — where we were, who we called, how it felt to watch the world change in real time.
Today, we pause to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, honor the first responders and everyday people who showed extraordinary courage, and hold space for the families and communities still carrying that loss.
A quarter-century later, we remain grateful for the courage and compassion shown that day, and we carry that memory forward as a reminder of who we can be for one another. We will never forget.

Labor Day is a fitting time to recognize the workforce that keeps our three ports running. From terminal operators and equipment technicians to logistics coordinators and vessel crews, the people behind Burns Harbor, Jeffersonville, and Mount Vernon are the reason Indiana's port system generates $8.7 billion in annual economic impact and supports nearly 49,000 jobs statewide.
Labor Day exists because of workers like these and we're proud to have them as the backbone of Indiana's port system. Happy Labor Day to everyone whose work keeps freight, agriculture, and industry moving across our state.

Representing Indiana on the water — 4,000+ miles from Burns Harbor.
Our European Trade Representative, Brian Dooley, recently joined a U.S. trade mission to the Port of Lisbon, touring @YILPORTHolding Liscont terminal and meeting with leaders across the Iberian logistics sector.
Key highlights from the visit:
🚢 The all-water corridor: We presented our vision for a container route linking the U.S. Midwest to global markets via the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes
🌾 Agriculture meets logistics: Talks focused on exporting the region's grain, soybeans, corn, and wheat to meet growing EU-27 demand.
🚆 Expanding rail access: Yilport's new Portugal-Madrid rail link opens fresh trade routes into the Spanish market.
Thank you to our hosts and mission partners for a productive visit.

Congratulations to our CEO, Jody Peacock, named one of the inaugural recipients of the CARGO Award from Inland Rivers, Ports & Terminals (IRPT) — recognizing individuals whose careers have helped move the inland waterways industry forward.
It's a fitting honor. In 25+ years in the maritime industry, including the last three as CEO, Jody has helped grow Ports of Indiana into a self-funded enterprise that now contributes $8.7 billion annually to Indiana's economy and supports 50,000 jobs — while notching three straight years of record growth and expanding POI's international footprint.
"Ports are more than places where cargo changes hands — they're engines for economic growth and gateways to the world," Jody said in accepting the award.

Did you know over 24,000 Hoosiers work directly in an active FTZ environment? Nationwide that number is 543,000 Americans!
The Foreign-Trade Zone program was established in 1934, by Congress, to assist American recovery from the Great Depression. Since that time, global trade and investment in the United State has skyrocketed helping to lead America to a projected $31.8 trillion GDP in 2026.
If you are an importer or exporter, get in touch; Ports of Indiana has resources to help connect you to this valuable program.

This World Lake Day, we're recognizing the lake that carries our region's economy — and the role we all play in keeping it strong for generations to come. 💧
Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake located entirely within the United States — and one of the largest freshwater lakes on Earth, spanning over 22,000 square miles. It's also the water Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor relies on every day to move Hoosier goods to global markets.
Maritime shipping is one of the most fuel-efficient ways to move cargo; one vessel can carry as much freight as hundreds of trucks, using far less fuel per ton. This makes the Great Lakes shipping system a quietly sustainable backbone of Midwest trade.

Big news for the Ports of Indiana-Mount Vernon Megamodal site: it just earned a Silver designation through REDI Sites (Readiness Evaluation for Development and Investment), the @SiteSelectGuild's rigorous third-party certification for development-ready industrial sites.
Located at Ports of Indiana-Mount Vernon, the 544-acre site was independently evaluated by @terraconlife across five categories — utilities, ownership & entitlements, environmental, ease of development, and logistics. What sets it apart: true barge, rail, and highway access, OmniTRAX rail service, and its location within a designated foreign trade zone.
This designation gives site selectors and prospective companies independently verified confidence that Mount Vernon is ready to move fast — a difference-maker in a competitive site-selection process where speed matters.
Proud to have worked alongside @evvregion, OmniTRAX, and @CenterPoint Energy to get here. This is one more reason Mount Vernon stands out as one of the nation's premier multimodal freight hubs.
